Hawaii High School Football Rankings: Top 25 Teams – Sept. 14

Mililani is starting to look like one of the best teams in Hawaii, not just this year, but in recent memory, and appear to be without a real weakness on either side of the ball. We’ll learn a lot more these next two weeks when the Trojans take on Kahuku and Campbell, the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the state.
Below are the top 25 Hawaii high school football teams, according to the Massey Ratings, as of September 14.
1. Mililani (4-0)
After several dominant wins against out-of-state teams, Mililani hosted Leilehua and pitched a shutout 43-0. Standout junior quarterback Hunter Fujikawa continued his strong play, completing 18-20 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns, and added another score on the ground. Stud sophomore receiver Ashton Grace had a game-high seven catches for 89 yards and a touchdown, and running back Toa Sam rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns and added another score out of the backfield. The Trojans will host Leilehua on Saturday.
2. Kahuku (3-1)
Kahuku battled and played hard against Southern California power Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco, but the Braves’ passing attack was too much, and the Red Raiders dropped a tough one 49-13. Bosco quarterback Koa Malau’ulu had a big night, throwing for 355 yards and five touchdowns. Red Raider running back Blake Alo was a bright spot, rushing for 123 yards and a touchdown and Blazyn-Brave Nunuha added a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as well. It won’t get much easier for the Red Raiders this week as they play on the road against top ranked Mililani on Friday.
3. James Campbell (4-1)
The Sabers put themselves back in the state title conversation with a big 17-14 win over Kapolei. Kapolei was previously undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the state. Campbell has now won four games in a row after losing their season opener and made big plays in all three phases of the game. The Sabers scored all their points on defense and special teams in this one. Sacramento State corner commit Isaiah Chong, one of the region’s top defensive backs, had a 42 yard pick-six that proved to be the game-winner and gave the Sabers a 14-7 lead late in the 1st half. It came just a few plays after Charlie Salazar took a kickoff back 70 yards for a touchdown to tie the game for Campbell. The offense did just enough and were able to keep possession and run out the clock after Kapolei missed a potential game-tying field goal. The Sabers will play at Kailua on Saturday.
4. Kapolei (3-1)
Despite holding Campbell’s offense to just 176 total yards and no points, the Hurricanes lost in a defensive slugfest 17-14. Campbell scored touchdowns on a kickoff return and a pick-six and added a field goal late in the 1st half. Kapolei running back Chazz-Michael Kapahu scored a touchdown late in the 4th quarter to pull within three, and the Hurricanes had some life after recovering the ensuing onside kick. A potential game-tying 38-yard field goal was missed,a forced and Campbell was able to run out the clock. Hurricane linebacker Kaimana Sione had a huge game, recording eight tackles, two sacks and forced a fumble. Kapolei will try to get back on the track Friday when they host Leilehua.
5. Kamehameha (2-4)
A low-scoring defensive struggle was expected, and that was essentially what we got as the Warriors took down Punahou 16-6 to end their four-game losing streak. Wide receiver Jayden Braun had a hand in both touchdowns with a touchdown catch and added a touchdown toss on a halfback option to Loea Asuega-Stark. The Warriors will host Pac-Five on Saturday.
6. St. Louis (0-4)
It has been an eventful few days for the Crusaders. After getting decimated by a strong Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon team 52-0 on Friday, St. Louis head coach Tupu Alualu was relieved of his duties on Monday. Alualu was in his third season as head coach at St. Louis and won the Open Division State title in his first season with the program. It’s been a struggle this season with a roster not nearly as strong as the previous season and playing one of the toughest schedules in the country. The Crusaders are set to host another national power when Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco comes to visit on Saturday.

7. Waipahu (3-1)
Waipahu throttled Nānākuli 78-0 in a game that got ugly real quick. The Marauders led 64-0 at the half, scoring on the ground, through the air, and on defense. Quarterback Jake Garcia continued his strong play, completing 12-of-13 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns, and added two more scores on the ground. The Marauders will host No. 10-ranked Aiea on Friday.
8. Punahou (1-2-1)
The Buff ‘n Blue dropped another tough one, where the defense played well, but the offense struggled to get it going. Kamehameha took down Punahou 16-6, and it was the third straight game the Buff ‘n Blue failed to score more than 10 points. Punahou has a bye this weekend and will host Pac-Five on September 26.
9. Wai’anae (3-0)
The Seariders are coming off a bye and will host Moanalua on Friday.
10. Aiea (3-0)
Aiea had a bye over the weekend and will host 7th-ranked Waipahu on Friday.
