The UConn Huskies football team enters Week 3 of the season at 1-1 after a lopsided win (56-7) against Lafayette and a lopsided loss (38-14) against Maryland.

UConn will travel to Southern Miss for its first road game under new head coach Jason Candle (7:30 p.m. ET, Saturday) looking to get over .500.

While two games is often way too soon to make sweeping generalizations about a team, one thing has become abundantly clear for the Huskies through two games.

This team is Kalieb Osborne dependent.

The Kalieb Osborne file

A transfer who followed Candle from Toledo, Osborne officially won the starting quarterback job in the day before the season opener. All he did in that opener against Lafayette was go 19-of-26 for 265 yards and two touchdowns through the air. 

Furthermore, he was the team's leading rusher, adding 90 yards on eight carries. He also scored two touchdowns. He was praised nationally for his efforts.

And while the Week 2 game against the Terrapins was a lot less crisp, the Huskies were still dependent on him to make anything happen. He threw for 156 yards and a touchdown, and he also got the most carries of any player (13), though he only amassed 30 yards.

What we'd like to see moving forward

Look, this was always going to be a challenging year for UConn. When previous head coach Jim Mora left, he took a bunch of players with him to Colorado State. Starting quarterback Joe Fagnano and All-American wide receiver Skyler Bell are now in the NFL.

Running back Cam Edwards transferred to Michigan State.

The Huskies program features a ton of new players and the loss of some real star power. That's hard to overcome. It won't always be pretty, but there is something we'd like to see: And that's the development of the offensive line.

Osborne is a solid player, and the Huskies should lean on him to make plays, but he can't be relied upon to do everything. From a strategy standpoint, that becomes too easy to key in on for opponents. From a practical standpoint, that kind of usage can get him hurt.

So, we'd like to see the offensive line improve with the intent of giving other offensive options a chance to succeed. Kenji Christian is a dynamic runner, but he only had 17 yards on nine carries last week. If he can get a crease, he can help this offense, but he has to get it first.

Is that possible?

The line improving? Of course it is, but with ACC teams Syracuse and North Carolina also on the schedule, there will be some tough growing pains, I'm sure. But Southern Miss is not an ACC school, and the Huskies can start the improvement on Saturday.
