Nobody gave the Oklahoma State Cowboys a fighting chance against the No. 6 Oregon Ducks entering Saturday’s showdown. Coming off a 21-game losing streak against FBS opponents and a painful 66-point blowout loss to Oregon last season, Oklahoma State needed a massive spark to rewrite the narrative.
Quarterback Drew Mestemaker answered the call in legendary fashion, spearheading a shocking 39-31 upset that sent thousands of fans charging onto the field at Boone Pickens Stadium.
Speaking on ESPN’s SportsCenter after the signature victory, Mestemaker could not hide his pride in how his teammates responded under intense pressure.

And what a show it was. The dynamic transfer turned in an absolute masterclass, completing 26 of 43 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns, including a 52-yard strike to receiver Wyatt Young. But Mestemaker did not just damage the Ducks through the air; he gashed their defense on the ground for 109 rushing yards and a touchdown on just six carries. He set the aggressive tone immediately on the game’s first play from scrimmage with an electrifying 75-yard scamper.
When Oregon reclaimed a 31-30 lead early in the fourth quarter, Mestemaker provided the game’s defining highlight. He engineered a clutch 75-yard drive, culminating in a 10-yard touchdown run where he fearlessly launched himself over defenders into the end zone to retake the lead for good.
Behind Mestemaker’s heroics, Oklahoma State outgained Oregon 554 yards to 281, snapping their long skid and securing their first victory over a top-six ranked opponent since 2022. The stellar performance earned Mestemaker AP National Player of the Week honors. From entering as 23-point underdogs to watching delirious students tear down goalposts and carry them into Theta Pond, Mestemaker and the Cowboys proved that putting on a show is sweetest when no one sees it coming.
