Utah football will wrap up non-conference play with an in-state matchup against Utah State on Saturday afternoon at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The 108th meeting between the Utes and Aggies going back to 1892, four years before Utah officially became a state.

The No. 17 Utes enter the matchup 2-0 after a 43-10 win over Arkansas. A different story for Utah State (0-2), who suffered a 16-14 loss to No. 19 Washington in Seattle last weekend.

Utah football's new era under Morgan Scalley is only two games deep. But so far, this is exactly what the Utes needed when Kyle Whittingham announced he was leaving the program. It wasn't an ideal way to change hands. Yet, Scalley made the right hires to make the process seamless.

The Utes identity hasn't changed through the transition. They are physical on defense and more versatile on offense. Being able to utilize depth on both sides of the ball has been key. Give a ton of credit to Kevin McGiven, who has built an offensive scheme around the strengths of Utah's playmakers. Scalley's team plays for each other with unselfishness rarely on display in the NIL era.

Utah State gives the Utes another opportunity to dig deep into the playbook on offense. McGiven will use this time to his advantage to figure out what Big 12 play will look like. Putting two outstanding quarterbacks on the field simultaneously is an advantage most teams won't have. The Utes have made it in many ways.

While Utah State feels like an easy win on the horizon, Utah should proceed with caution after dismantling Arkansas. The Utes will be heavy favorites, but the Aggies showed they are capable of pulling off an upset.
