LSU football faces a top-10 matchup against Ole Miss on Saturday. Beyond it being a return to Oxford for head coach Lane Kiffin, who coached there for six seasons, the Tigers face one of the country's most experienced offenses, led by quarterback Trinidad Chambliss. Kiffin said his familiarity with Ole Miss' personnel shapes his game plan.
"This benefits them more than us in the coaching way because Pete [Golding] sat there and for the years we're together and heard me say what we don't like to play against," Kiffin said. "There's just a lot of familiarity that's probably never happened before when people play the next year, then half the coaches are split, and then they're the coaches at the previous place, and then a few of the players are split."
Golding served as the defensive coordinator under Kiffin since 2023, then rose to the interim head coach role upon the latter's departure during the College Football Playoffs. After the Rebels made a run to the semifinals, Golding was named the head coach. He faces his former boss in Oxford on Saturday.
Chambliss ascended to the starting role in 2025, two games into his first season with the Rebels, finishing with 3,937 passing yards, 527 rushing yards, and 30 touchdowns. Kiffin called Chambliss "the best-playing quarterback in the country last year" and noted he is the same age as current NFL quarterbacks Drake Maye and Caleb Williams to emphasize his experience level.
"You're dealing with a really mature quarterback that doesn't make many mistakes, so you're going to have to play really well for a long period of time," Kiffin said. "You're dealing with someone that everybody said, 'Well, not that much experience because last year was the first year starting at SEC.' He's got a lot of maturity and age and a lot of plays in big-time games that you're going to have to play really well for a long period of time against him."
