About No. 5 Miami (2-0, 1-0 ACC): Miami is off to a hot start, moving up two spots in the AP poll and into the top five. The Hurricanes’ offense has excelled, and it scored on nearly every drive against Florida A&M last week.
About Wake Forest (2-0): The Demon Deacons escaped a road trip to Purdue last week, beating the Boilermakers in double overtime. Wake Forest is coming off a 9-4 season last year.
Three things to watch
1. The Hurricanes’ secondary is hurting. Three cornerbacks, including starters OJ Frederique Jr. and Xavier Lucas, are out for the foreseeable future with undisclosed injuries. Miami started Damari Brown and Bryce Fitzgerald at outside cornerback against Florida A&M, and they performed well. This week, the corners have a tougher task in defending against quarterback Gio Lopez and standout wide receiver Carlos Hernandez.
2. Lopez is an intriguing quarterback. He had success in 2024 at South Alabama before transferring to North Carolina in 2025. Lopez struggled with the Tar Heels and transferred to Wake Forest, where he reunited with former South Alabama offensive coordinator (and current Wake Forest coordinator) Rob Ezell. In two games, Lopez has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 575 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He has also run for 97 yards and a pair of scores.
3. Miami has its own star quarterback, Darian Mensah. The Duke transfer has been nearly perfect through his first two games with UM. He has completed 41 of 45 passes with eight touchdowns while playing less than five full quarters of football. Pro Football Focus gives Mensah a 94.1 passing grade, which is No. 1 in the nation.
