‘That Was Awful’ — Ex-NFL WR Bluntly Rips Deshaun Watson, Calls for Shedeur Sanders To Take Over As Browns QB1

The Cleveland Browns quarterback has been catching headlines after his disappointing performance on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Browns paid him $230 million, and it looks like it was a total waste.

The Browns lost 34–10 to the Jaguars, and fans were calling louder than ever for Shedeur Sanders to be given a chance. The quarterback was seen struggling throughout the game, as Watson finished 16 of 22 for 205 yards, one touchdown and one interception while taking five sacks.

Cris Carter Rips Deshaun Watson, Backs Shedeur Sanders

In a recent episode of the “Fully Loaded” podcast, Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter shared his honest thoughts on Watson’s performance. He questioned how long the organization could tolerate Watson’s underperformance. Carter believes that Sanders should be given a chance and said:

“Now they have an opportunity to get a little spark from Shedeur, compared to if Shedeur struggled. They’re not going to be able to get a spark by bringing Deshaun on because the crowd will be booing. So now they can get a little spark. He can bring his little swag.”

“To me, he played well enough last season that he should have been in the quarterback competition. And I don’t know what happened this offseason or in training camp, but to think that he’s not better than what was out there, that was discouraging. Because that was awful. They had no chance. Maybe the first three or four plays and everything, but we knew this was not going to last long. Like that first interception, it was like, is he color-blind?”

Carter also discussed how Watson appeared confident before the game and was out signing autographs for Browns fans. He also questioned the head coach’s decision and said:

“You can’t put together a professional operation and tell guys, ‘I need you to do your job. Do your job. Do your job. And if you don’t do your job, I’ll get someone to do your job.’ But you have someone who’s not doing his job, and no one’s saying anything. So, accountability in NFL locker rooms is real, and Monken is going to have to answer for that.”

Watson can change the perspective of fans and analysts by showing why the head coach believed in him in the first place. However, another poor performance could make it difficult for the Browns to continue defending their decision. Sanders remains a popular option among fans, and the calls for him will only grow louder if Watson struggles again. The veteran quarterback now faces an opportunity to silence the criticism and prove that he can still lead Cleveland’s offense. It will be interesting to see whether Watson responds with a strong performance or whether Monken is forced to make a change at quarterback.
