Louisville football played literally everyone against Villanova during its 59-13 trouncing. Although head coach Jeff Brohm didn’t have tackle Anwar O’Neal healthy. Now the veteran coach looks ready to roll out his key protector with nationally-ranked SMU next up.
College football insider for On3 Pete Nakos dropped the update Wednesday ahead of the pivotal Atlantic Coast Conference showdown.
“Positive update for Louisville: Projected starting OT Anwar O’Neal is probable for the top-25 matchup with SMU and is trending toward making his first appearance of the season for the Cardinals,” Nakos posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.

The senior O’Neal brings prototypical 6-foot-5 size to the line. He built his resume with Delaware including during its transition to Conference USA. O’Neal started in 11 games for the Fighting Blue Hens. That Delaware offense averaged 411.1 yards per game including scoring 29 points per contest. He surrendered just six sacks on the season and now gets to take on the ACC rigors.
He’ll be needed against one of the trending contenders in the ACC outside of the Miami Hurricanes. No. 23 Louisville bounced back quick from its shootout loss to Ole Miss in week zero 41-38. But now faces a fierce foe to start off conference play. Let alone the nation’s 16th-ranked team.
SMU forced two takeaways in the 56-10 trouncing of UC Davis this past Saturday, plus grabbed two sacks. Of course quarterback Kevin Jennings is the main catalyst behind the Mustangs’ attack, who tossed five touchdowns and racked up 337 yards through the air in that rout.
