Florida Football Has to Continue Impressing in One Under-the-Radar Area

There's a lot to take away from what Florida has done over the first two weeks of the college football season, even if some people want to make it sound like we shouldn't give it any credit because of wins against Campbell and Florida Atlantic.

At the end of the day, Florida has scored more than 110 points and has allowed only 24. The first win against Florida Atlantic, with the Gators beating the Owls 66-21, had some impressive moments.

Defensively, however, it felt like Florida could have been much better on that side of the ball.

Against both teams, Florida allowed just three points against Campbell and didn't have to do much more on defense, so it's important to look at what the offense did.

Florida's offense has been among the best in America to start the year, which has led ESPN to rank the program 22nd in the country.

“The Gators are far better coached on offense and special teams through two games under new coach Jon Sumrall. The improvement in special teams is especially stark, considering that had been a recurring issue under former coach Billy Napier. Watching Vernell Brown III return two punts for touchdowns in a 52-3 win over Campbell only proved that point.

“Brown joined Jacquez Green in 1996 as the only players in school history to return back-to-back punts for touchdowns. His 173 total punt return yards set a program record for single-game punt return yardage. Brown also added a receiving touchdown, Dallas Wilson had 104 yards receiving and a score, and Jadan Baugh rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Florida scored more than 50 points in consecutive games to start the season for the first time since 2009,” Andrea Adelson wrote for ESPN.

There's a lot to like about what Florida has been able to do on the offensive side of the football, and as Adelson touched on, the special teams have been impressive.

Those are small things that help teams win games, especially when we factor in that Florida just posted 8.3 yards per play against Campbell. If the offense can even be a shell of that against elite teams in the SEC, we should be looking at one of the best teams in America.
