Northwestern football will be playing one last game at the old Ryan Field before the grand opening of their new stadium on Oct. 2. Before the move, they’ve made sure to extend head coach David Braun with a new contract, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
“Sources: Northwestern and coach David Braun have agreed to a new contract, extending him through the 2031 season. Braun had been on his initial deal, which came after he earned the job as the interim in 2023. His prior deal had been through 2028, so this adds three years and delivers a significant salary increase,” Thamel wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Braun was named the interim head coach after they fired Pat Fitzgerald. He is 20-19 as their head coach and 11-19 in conference play.

Braun was also named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2023 and led the team to the Las Vegas Bowl, helping them to their first eight-win season since 2018.
In 2024, they went 2-8 and 2-7 in conference play, but in 2005, they went 7-6 and won the GameAbove Sports Bowl. This season, Northwestern has started the year 1-0 after beating South Dakota. Their next game will be at home against Colorado, which is set to be the final game in their old stadium.
There’s no doubt that the program believes in Braun and everything that he’s doing with the football team. The hope is that he continues to pile up wins, and hopefully at some point, they find themselves in the College Football Playoffs. It may be a tall task, but they have the right coach guiding them.
