Southern Illinois:
The Salukis (2-1) are coming off back-to-back victories over Samford in Week 2 and Southeast Missouri State last weekend.
QB DJ Williams returned to the starting lineup after missing Week 1 with a knee injury sustained in SIU's season opener at West Florida. The Harvey, Illinois, native rushed for four touchdowns and threw for one, completing 17-of-31 passes for 286 yards.
Williams is in his seventh season of college football. He spent 2020-2023 at Murray State before transferring to SIU in 2024.
Saturday's game marks the fifth all-time meeting between the two programs. Illinois has won each of the previous four games.
Illinois:
The Fighting Illini (1-1) look to bounce back after falling 31-27 against Duke last Saturday.
QB Katin Houser, a transfer from East Carolina, completed 24-of-35 passes for 271 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. However, Illinois' offense scored just three points in the second half — a field goal that game in the third quarter.
"I don't want to diminish Duke's performance, but I believe our own mistakes led to this outcome. We had a turnover, but the self-inflicted penalties and mental errors across all three phases are what ultimately hurt us, " head coach said Bret Bielema after the loss.
"It comes down to the simple things: communication, execution in critical moments, and avoiding simple errors. To have a sellout crowd like we did today and not deliver is disappointing. Winning is addictive for players, coaches, and fans alike, so when we fall short it is frustrating and I feel that deeply.
Illinois is seeking its first ever College football playoff appearance this season.
