Mississippi governor warns of largest police presence in Ole Miss history for 'Hurricane Kiffin'

Lane Kiffin's return to Oxford, Mississippi, has already raised quite a hullabaloo in the college football world, as pundits and fans speculate on just how antagonistic his "welcome" is going to be.

Rumors of a National Guard presence had begun to spark in the headline firestorm leading into the game. According to Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, however, the measures taken to keep order in the Grove will not be quite that extreme — although they will be extreme all the same.

"Hurricane Kiffin will no doubt leave destruction in its wake for the Louisiana university system at some point," Reeves wrote in a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter. "But – NO – the Guard has not been deployed for this weekend. It is a very important college football game – but still a college football game nonetheless."

As for measures that are in place, Reeves said there will be a significant police presence.

"Mississippi has already made it clear to anyone attending that the police presence (state & local) in Oxford and on the Ole Miss campus will be the largest in our history," he said. "If you think you may want to create trouble – prepare for the consequences!"

Rumors of a National Guard presence had already been largely debunked, while Reeves serves as confirmation such drastic steps will not be taken.

Reeves was critical of Kiffin's absconsion to LSU, saying he was playing himself up as a victim.

“If you want to move to another position, go do it. That’s fine. But spare me the victimhood act,” Reeves said at the time.
