It should come as a surprise to no one that Miami football is excellent this season. However, thanks to a schedule with all of the choppiness of a pond in July and three straight non-Saturday games, the Hurricanes have been very easy to overlook to date.
Darian Mensah did his part to get noticed Sept. 18. In the first half against Wake Forest, a conference opponent, Mensah completed 20 passes on as many attempts, breaking the Miami and ACC records for most consecutive completions in one game. He finished at 35 consecutive completions dating back to last week, also a Miami record, breaking Carson Beck's previous record of 24.
Against Wake Forest, the Mensah-led Hurricanes jumped out to a 24-7 lead at halftime behind Mensah's 193 yards and two touchdowns.
It's just another day at the office for Mensah. He had a 93.8% completion percentage for the season at halftime, having completed 61-of-65 through two-and-a-half games. He also has 10 touchdowns and no interceptions thus far.
Who has the record for most consecutive completions?
Former Western Carolina QB Taron Dickens might be sweating a bit watching Mensah. He's barely had a chance to enjoy his NCAA record of 50 straight completions, which he set last season. Dickens, who is now with Northern Illinois, went 53-of-56 in a game last year and started 46-of-46.
The FBS record belongs to Dominique Davis with 36; he completed 26 straight passes to open against Navy in 2011 for East Carolina. Mensah's streak was snapped on his 25th attempt, putting him at 24 straight completions to open the game.
Darian Mensah Heisman Trophy odds
Mensah is the Heisman Trophy favorite heading into Week 3, sitting at +400, ahead of the likes of Jeremiah Smith, teammate Malachi Toney, and Notre Dame QB CJ Carr.
Miami will have Nov. 7 circled on its calendar, as that's when it plays Notre Dame. Before that, ACC foes like Clemson and Florida State provide some of the tougher tests on the schedule, though they've also struggled mightily this year.
