The Florida Gators have entered a new era under first-year head coach Jon Sumrall, who had a phenomenal run at Tulane, having led the Green Wave to the 2025 College Football Playoff.
Sumrall has been praised for his exceptional offensive mind, and his impact on this Gator program has been evident from the get-go, with Florida scoring a whopping 118 points over the first two games of the 2026 season.
Georgia Tech Junior transfer Aaron Philo has been fantastic under center for the Gators, having already thrown for 517 yards and five touchdowns.
Florida boasts an explosive group of playmakers on the offensive side of the ball, led by running back Jadan Baugh, who has quickly established himself as one of the premier halfbacks in all of college football. The Gators’ Junior RB ranks amongst the nation’s best in several statistical categories, including 296 rushing yards (4th), five touchdowns (3rd), and 10.6 YPC (4th).
Sumrall’s offense balances Baugh’s ground attack with a very talented receiving corps. However, Florida star wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. has missed the first two games of the season and enters Saturday’s matchup with a questionable designation.
The Gators defense has also been under new leadership in 2026, with former Kentucky defensive coordinator Brad White taking over that side of the ball in Gainesville.
White specializes in his 3-man and 4-man fronts, largely focusing on stopping the run, generating pressure, and minimizing explosive plays — all aimed at increasing physicality and consistency on the defensive side of the football.
Florida’s defense gets its first real test of the season vs. Alex Golesh’s explosive Tigers’ offensive unit led by dual-threat QB Byrum Brown.
It’s also a new era for the Auburn Tigers under first-year head coach Alex Golesh was brought in to take over the reins following an abysmal three-year stretch under Hugh Freeze, winning just 15 of 34 games over that stretch.
Golesh gained a great reputation as a sharp, offensive-minded coach after a very successful stint as head coach at South Florida for three seasons.
After successfully implementing his offensive style at South Florida with elite dual-threat QB Byrum Brown, whom Golesh brought with him to Auburn for the 2026 season.
The Tigers are off to a great start offensively, putting up 60 points over their first two game.
Auburn boasts a remarkably athletic backfield featuring RBs Jeremiah Cobb and Baylor transfer Bryson Washington, giving the Tigers a ton of schematic versatility with Brown under center.
The biggest concern for this Tigers bunch heading into the season was replacing its entire 2025 offensive line with several new transfers from the portal.
While Brown has been lighting it up offensively in his first two games at Auburn, the former South Florida star has a penchant for turning the ball over.
Tigers’ defensive coordinator DJ Durkin returns an aggressive, fast-paced, and physical defensive scheme that predominantly features a 3-3-5 base defense, but also successfully implements other variations depending on personnel and circumstance.
Though Durkin retained All-American linebacker Xavier Atkins, who led the SEC with 17 tackles for a loss, the rest of the Tigers’ defensive unit lost several key starters in the front seven. This could burn them when trying to slow down Baugh and the Gators.
Florida and Auburn have both looked impressive in their first two games of the season under new leadership, but the Gators have undoubtedly been the superior team on both sides of the football.
Despite playing weak competition in Florida Atlantic and FCS Campbell over its first two games, you can have a ton of faith in this Gator bunch under Sumrall, who’s already shown his ability to win at the highest level following a phenomenal run at Tulane.
I think Florida’s -2.5 betting line very accurately reflects which team the market prefers given how previously challenging it has been to go on the road and win at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium.
That said, the best bet here is to take a shot on Florida’s -130 moneyline as a short road-favorite in what has the makings of an electric SEC showdown.
