Michigan Football welcomes top 2028 QB target, elite LBs for UTEP game

Maize n Brew has the latest from The Big House, where Michigan Football and head coach Kyle Whittingham brought in priority recruiting targets for the game against the UTEP Miners.
*** These past few weeks have provided further clarity on the quarterback board for Michigan in the 2028 class. As players like Georgia commit Jayden Wade, who appears to remain locked in down south, and four-star Tristin Hughes, who was supposed to be at the game today but didn’t make it, things are trending towards a couple as high focuses at the moment. Starting with four-star Carter Zinglemann out of Coppell, Texas, who is making his first trip to Ann Arbor. Quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer Jr. is putting heavy emphasis on the 6-foot-4.5, 218-pounder, as this should be a great opportunity for the staff to make a move.
*** Zinglemann was seen walking out of the tunnel for warmups alongside 2028 linebacker Jet Thomas, a fellow Texan, who we will discuss later. SMU has hosted Zinglemann the most since March of this year and he’s coming off a trip to Oklahoma State to see the win over Oregon. If Michigan ends up losing out on Zinglemann, other quarterbacks to know are three-star JJ Howard and four-star Hunter Fujikawa. Howard will return for the Iowa game next weekend while Fujikawa was just offered by the Wolverines on Wednesday. Fujikawa’s relationship with the coaches extends back to last year when the latter were at Utah.
*** Michigan is also hosting an offered quarterback in the 2029 class — Saline (Mich.) High’s Case Campbell. The teammate of 2027 offensive lineman commit Louis Esposito, Campbell is the son of 1997 national champion Mark Campbell, who was at the game as well. Campbell made his first trip to Schembechler Hall following the arrival of the new staff a few months ago to watch spring camp, and Detmer ultimately offered him then. The ties to the program is just one part of Campbell’s early interest in the Wolverines. He has a great friendship with Tommy Carr and is getting to know both Detmer and offensive coordinator Jason Beck well.
*** Two more offered in-staters took in the warmups. Each were seen on the midfield logo alongside 2027 running back commit Lundon Hampton. We’ll start with 2028 Harper Woods athlete AJ Henley, a former teammate of Jacob Oden who could end up playing either wideout or tight end at the next level. Maize n Brew was at Harper Woods’ shutout win on Friday, with Henley scoring a touchdown and playing multiple positions, including in-line and the slot. Micah Simon is in communication with Henley the most so far. Joining Henley is four-star Cass Tech wide receiver Mylan Griggs. His offer sheet exploded in the offseason due to multiple standout performances at camps. But the Wolverines and Simon are keeping their respective interest high on Griggs, which is being reciprocated. U-M should remain a contender for both down the road.
*** Going back to Thomas, Alex Whittingham has now had two games this season where two offered 2028 linebackers made the trip at the same time. The opener had four-stars Jay Schell and Camden Noe, with Thomas and four-star Skylar Alston now getting their chance to revel in The Big House atmosphere. For Thomas, I really like what he brings to the table. A true thumper, Thomas hits hard and flys around the field. He’s also active on social media and regularly shows love to U-M, which makes sense considering the Wolverines were the first to offer him. Alston is another who could very well wind up in the class. This is the Raleigh, North Carolina native’s first time at Michigan, with other teams like Auburn, Penn State, UNC and Rutgers also being in the mix.
