Duke 35, Stanford 7: Five Key Plays

Duke improved to 3-0, 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a dominant 35-7 win over the Stanford Cardinal. Duke rushed for 268 yards and four touchdowns, while passing for 202 yards and one touchdown in a game Duke controlled from start to finish.
Nate Sheppard rushed 23 times for 154 yards and two touchdowns and Walker Eget completed 14 of 24 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown in the victory. Tight end Jeremiah Hasley was the leading receiver with five receptions for 88 yards.
On defense, Tyshon Reed and Kevin O’Connor were among those who sacked Stanford quarterback Davis Warren, with O’Connor recording multiple sacks and forcing a fumble.
Play One: After a scoreless 1st quarter, on 2nd down and 14 yards to go, Nate Sheppard rushed 32 yards for a touchdown to give Duke a 7-0 lead with 10 minutes and 42 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter.
Play Two: With 7 minutes and 39 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter, Walker Eget completed a pass to tight end Jeremiah Hasley for an 18-yard gain to the Stanford 8-yard line. Later in the drive, quarterback Walker Eget hit running back Nate Sheppard for a 2-yard touchdown pass with 5:29 left in the half. Duke 14, Stanford 0.
Play Three: On second and four yards to go from the Duke 41-yard line, quarterback Walker Eget found wide receiver Jaivon Solomon for a 32-yard completion to the Stanford 27-yard line. Four plays later Nate Sheppard rushed one yard for a Duke touchdown and a 21-7 lead.
Play Four: With two minutes and 56 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter, Kavon Simmons rushed for a 16-yard touchdown on a play that was supposed to be a double pass. Simmons caught the first backward pass, determined the second pass was not open and ran around the right end for a 16-yard touchdown to expand Duke’s lead to 28-7.
Play Five: With eight minutes and 20 seconds remaining in the game, true freshman Jayvian Tanelus rushed five yards for a Duke touchdown and a 35-7 lead.
