Saturday night’s LSU-Ole Miss game was among the most anticipated regular-season matchups in recent college football history. While Lane Kiffin and the Tigers suffered a disappointing loss against the Rebels, ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit also found himself facing criticism from fans over his commentary during the game.

Kirk Herbstreit Draws Heavy Criticism During LSU-Ole Miss Showdown

Ahead of the LSU-Ole Miss game, ESPN’s College GameDay was stationed at The Grove for discussions and predictions surrounding the game.

However, Herbstreit did not offer a prediction because he was set to handle commentary duties for ABC from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

The highly anticipated return to Oxford ultimately ended in disappointment for Kiffin, as the LSU head coach fell to his former program after leaving Ole Miss before its playoff run last season. Despite the attention surrounding Kiffin’s return, Ole Miss fans did not unleash the level of jeers or hostility toward their former coach that many had anticipated.

Herbstreit was among those who praised Chambliss for his performance, but his own commentary during the game drew criticism from fans watching the broadcast.

“Kirk Herbstreit is insufferable,” NFL agent Damien S. Butler wrote.

“Kirk Herbstreit never shuts up. It’s next to impossible to watch a game with him as an analyst. Shut up and let the game breathe once in a while,” a fan said.

“Kirk Herbstreit is losing it… been watching too much NFL lol,” one person remarked.

Herbstreit also drew attention for referencing the NC State-Vanderbilt game during his commentary of the LSU-Ole Miss game.

NC State had built a comfortable lead and appeared to be on its way to win before a late Vanderbilt drive gave the Commodores a chance to take the lead. NC State intercepted the potential go-ahead attempt, but then remarkably fumbled away what seemed to be a certain win.

“You happen to see that NC State game? It was just like this,” Herbstreit said.

The reference did not sit well with some fans, as they felt Herbstreit’s focus on NC State’s collapse was unnecessary during one of the biggest games of the college football weekend.

“I mean, holy hell, Kirk Herbstreit is talking about NC State’s debacle as Ole Miss runs the clock out; we are the LAUGHING STOCK OF AMERICA,” a person said.

“Kirk Herbstreit was awful as a commentator tonight!!! Good for Ole Miss,” one added.

Following the loss, Kiffin is now 2-1 in his first season at LSU and will look to respond when the Tigers face Texas A&M on September 26. Meanwhile, Pete Golding’s Ole Miss improved to 3-0 and will attempt to remain undefeated against Florida next Saturday.
