Lane Kiffin waxes poetic about Ole Miss atmosphere after painful LSU loss

Lane Kiffin knows he left an impact on the Ole Miss Rebels program. He reflected on it after his No. 7 LSU Tigers suffered a 32-24 defeat in his return Saturday night.

The Week 3 clash was a blockbuster. Kiffin infamously left the Rebels after six seasons, departing in 2025 despite leading the team to the College Football Playoff. He seized the opportunity to coach at LSU, which had fired Brian Kelly after four seasons.

That decision sparked controversy, as Kiffin was seeking greener pastures despite achieving a lot with the Rebels. Kiffin got to look back on his stint with the program, showing appreciation for how it benefited him on and off the field.

“It was just really a lot of emotions of gratefulness for this place, and the six years went well beyond football. Kind of the first time coming into this type of game without my dad. It was a lot and was really emotional. But it was not emotions maybe that I thought I would have felt from all to name calling, everything when we got off the bus and everything. It was much more just a lot of gratitude for this place and the people that changed my life. Way bigger than football,” Kiffin said after the game.

How Lane Kiffin and LSU performed against Ole Miss

Kiffin and the Tigers will look to move on after falling short in the marquee matchup.

Ole Miss landed the biggest blows in the first half, building a 24-7 lead at halftime. LSU tried fighting back in the second half but couldn’t create enough big plays to complete the comeback.

Sam Leavitt may have dealt with an injury ahead of the game but still started. He completed 16 out of 27 passes for 158 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. He also racked up 17 carries for 63 yards and a score.

Dilin Jones led the rushing attack, finishing with 23 carries for 106 yards and touchdown. Trey’Dez Green caught four passes for 60 yards, while Winston Watkins Jr. made three receptions for 54 yards and a TD.

The Tigers will try to bounce back with the support of a home crowd in their next matchup. They host the No. 9 Texas A&M Aggies in Week 4, with kickoff commencing on Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
