South Carolina’s latest loss has changed the conversation around Shane Beamer from a disappointing result to questions about his future. The Gamecocks let a strong start slip away at home against Mississippi State, leaving fans frustrated with another collapse.
As the criticism grew inside Williams-Brice Stadium, social media soon turned toward possible changes at the top.
Calls Grow for South Carolina To Move On From Shane Beamer
The Gamecocks fell 41-34 to Mississippi State after taking an early 16-0 lead and holding a 23-14 advantage at halftime. The biggest breakdown came after the break, when South Carolina was outscored 17-0 in the third quarter.
This collapse was bound to invite criticism from fans on X. One supporter wrote, “Fire Shane Beamer if you can’t beat this trash-[expletive] Mississippi State team.”
The frustration stemmed from more than one bad quarter. South Carolina has struggled against Power Four opponents, and the latest defeat dropped Beamer to 2-10 in his last 12 games against those teams.
Another fan directed the criticism toward both Beamer and former athletic director Ray Tanner, who hired Beamer in 2020, writing, “How full of [expletive] is that guy? Nobody else in the country would have hired him except Ray Tanner. He’s squandered his opportunity. He’s done. It’s over for Shane Beamer.”

The Gamecocks also had opportunities to create more separation early. They settled for three field goals in the first half, while quarterback LaNorris Sellers later threw interceptions on consecutive third-quarter possessions that helped Mississippi State turn the game around.
Those issues added to the feeling among fans that the latest defeat was part of a larger pattern. One fan referenced previous struggles against SEC opponents and wrote, “Losing to Mississippi state, vandy, and blowing a 27-point lead gets any coach fired. Act like a real SEC team and fire Shane Beamer will ya.”
The criticism then moved toward potential alternatives. One particularly pointed post brought offensive coordinator Kendal Briles into the discussion, saying, “Can South Carolina fire Shane Beamer and just make Kendall Briles the head coach? We tried the nepo kid from a nice family. It’s time to try a nepo kid from an evil one.”
The “nepo kid” label refers to Beamer being the son of longtime Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer. As calls for a coaching change grew, another fan urged the program to begin considering replacements, writing, “And Shane Beamer isn’t a good head coach. Fire up the hot board for coachs, Brad.”
Moreover, fans at Williams-Brice Stadium also made their feelings clear late in the game, breaking into chants of “Fire Beamer!” as Mississippi State completed the comeback.
