‘Just Blatant, Terrible Misses’ — CFB Analyst Argues Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed Is SEC’s Worst QB After Devastating Loss to Kentucky

Marcel Reed is drawing heavy criticism after Texas A&M’s 31-21 home loss to Kentucky. The Aggies quarterback was in the Heisman conversation last season, but his uneven start to 2026 has intensified scrutiny of his play.
Marcel Reed’s Stock Is Trending Down
CFB analyst Bud Elliott over at CBS Sports was not impressed with Reed in the slightest, making comments like, “just blatant, terrible misses” and “he’s just not a plus factor in a major conference at quarterback.”
Those are bold remarks after Reed was the engine that helped lead the Aggies to the CFP last year, but it’s hard to ignore how he has played as of late.
Reed hasn’t seemed to progress much since last season, becoming too reliant on trying to dance around in the pocket and looking less confident as a passer. He showed signs of struggling later in the year last season against Texas in a loss, and then after their one-and-done performance in the CFP against Miami.
This year, those issues are showing up even more without KC Concepcion, who is now in the NFL catching passes for the Browns.
Texas A&M still has an elite pass catcher in Mario Craver, but without his running mate on the other side, defenses can zero in on him and take him out of the game plan. That forces Reed to look elsewhere, and right now, he is clearly having a hard time doing that.
Reed went 26-of-49, throwing for 236 yards, one passing touchdown, and two interceptions in the 31-21 loss to Kentucky at home, no less. It was a lackluster performance, and at this point, it’s fair to wonder if his play has regressed.
It shows in his PFN CFB QB Impact Scores from 2024-2026 the years that he has started games for the Aggies. In 2024, he had an 80, followed by his best season in 2025 with an 83.6, and now, this year, he is trending towards his worst in the early going with a 79.6 thus far.
The schedule doesn’t get much easier in a brutal SEC, where each week feels like the NFL. They follow up the game against Kentucky with LSU, which is also coming off a loss against Ole Miss. They’ll be playing desperation football to get back into the win column and keep their CFP hopes alive, so next week will be a crucial matchup between the two teams.
If Reed can’t clean up these miscues soon, Mike Elko may need to start looking at other options to get things righted before it’s too late.
