Longhorns football star Michael Taaffe has moved one step closer to adding to his trophy case. On Monday, the Texas native was named a finalist for the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy. Each year, the award is given to College Football players who exemplify community service, academic excellence, and athletic achievement.

While Taaffe has been one of the Longhorns' most dependable players in the secondary, he has also made an impact off the field. He has worked with Texas Against Fentanyl. The organization raises awareness and provides resources and advocacy for prevention and education about fentanyl. During his time as a Longhorn, Taaffe has used his platform to promote change.

As the Austin native has become an important part of the community, he has excelled on the field. Despite missing two games this season due to injury, he is second on the team in tackles with 65. The Longhorns' safety has also added one interception, one pass break-up, and one sack to his resume. For a team ranked in the top 20, Taaffe has been a model of consistency.

Over the next few weeks, the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy will not be the only award Taaffe will have his eyes on. He is also a finalist for the Burlsworth Trophy and a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe and Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year awards. Depending on how voting goes, the Westlake High Grad could have a couple of reasons to celebrate once award season rolls around.

With the former walk-on leading the way, the Longhorns' defense ranks third in the FBS in sacks and sixth in 4th down conversion percentage defense. They also rank sixth in opponent yards per rush attempt and eighth in rushing defense. While the offense has struggled at times, the defense has held its own in one of the nation's toughest conferences.

In just a few weeks, Taaffe will know his fate when it comes to the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy. The winner will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards show on Dec. 12, which will be aired on ESPN, and the Longhorns are hoping they have a reason to celebrate.
