Michigan ascends to No. 18 in AP Poll following trouncing of UTEP

As the Michigan football team jumps out to its first 3-0 start since 2023, the Wolverines are also scaling the AP Poll: albeit, in small increments.
After checking back in at No. 19 following an upset win over Oklahoma last week, Michigan has jumped one more spot to No. 18 following a 52-17 trouncing of UTEP.
The Wolverines put together their most complete showing of the season against the Miners yesterday afternoon. Apart from two costly fumbles that turned into scores, Michigan was unimpeachable, with quarterback Bryce Underwood taking command of the offense, and running back Savion Hiter having his coming-out party with two scores.
I think having the Wolverines only go up a spot is fair. As impressive as their outing was, wins over G6 programs tend to not weigh heavily on the minds of AP voters. Michigan is still suffering from early season poll-inertia, and if the Wolverines can manage a win over No. 17 Iowa next week, I’d expect voters to reward them for it.
Around the country, Texas, Georgia and Notre Dame hold strong in the top three, while Ole Miss makes the biggest leap forward into the top four following victory in a very publicized revenge game over Lane Kiffin and No. 10 LSU. Around the conference, No. 4 Indiana, No. 7 Ohio State, No. 12 USC, No. 13 Penn State and No. 20 Oregon make up the rest of the pack.
