Nick Saban calls Ohio State fans 'psychotic' for Michigan obsession

Nick Saban thinks that Ohio State fans who want a Michigan win over a national championship should schedule some sort of doctor’s appointment.

Appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Nov. 26, former Alabama coach and seven-time national champion Nick Saban discussed the intensity of the upcoming Ohio State-Michigan game on Nov. 29. He strongly oppposed the idea that fans would pick a win against the Wolverines over a back-to-back national championship bid, despite Michigan winning the past four games.

“These Ohio State fans, they’re psychotic about this, man,” Saban said to McAfee and former Buckeye linebacker AJ Hawk. “They all need to go to see a doctor some place. I’d rather win the national championship than beat Michigan. That’s just me.”

Saban, who coached defensive backs at Ohio State in 1980 and 1981, mentioned that legendary Buckeyes coach Woody Hayes talked to the 1981 team, coached by Earle Bruce, after a “negative” week of practice for Ohio State. Hayes rallied the team around a “great opportunity for a team win” after the Buckeyes had already lost two games that season and were to face No. 7-ranked Michigan.

“That was the difference in the mindset of how we played,” Saban said. “They played tight, and we played loose, and we played ass over teakettle and won the game 14-9.”
