Do The Kansas State Wildcats Need To Lessen Load On QB Avery Johnson?

Kansas State Wildcats quarterback Avery Johnson had perhaps the best overall game of his career last Saturday against the Tulane Green Wave.

It was so good he accounted for 90 percent of the team's offense. The question is this: was it too much?

The Wildcats would love a game as such from Johnson every week but does it put too much pressure on him to perform at a high level. Johnson threw for 228 yards while also running for 152 yards and two touchdowns.

Neither Johnson or first-year coach Collin Klein had a problem with the senior quarterback carrying the load. It was the Wildcats' toughest matchup so far this season, so Johnson delivered when needed the most.

Johnson insists there will be days where his teammates are bailing him out. He fully expects them to return the favor at some point this season. To him, it's no big deal.

“I mean, we have so much talent on this team," Johnson said. "Like I was saying this on the radio, you never know who's going to get the opportunities in the pass game. It could be Oaks’ Day (Garrett Oakley), Will's Day (Will Anciaux), Lincoln's Day (Lincoln Cure). You could have Josh (Manning) like it was last week. You have (Jaron) Tibbs like it was today. You never know who is gonna erupt on a certain Saturday."

The Wildcats are showing they have talent throughout the offense. Johnson had to produce so much last week because of limited production from the running backs. That wasn't the case in the first two games, with Rodney Fields topping 100 yards each time.

Still, the Wildcats shouldn't worry about relying too much on Johnson. In fact, they should feel good knowing they can rely on him when needed.

K-State gets its stiffest Saturday on the road against the Cincinnati Bearcats. It is the Big 12 conference opener for both teams. The Wildcats have the chance for a 4-0 start for the first time since 2012. That year, they finished 11-2 and won the conference title.
