Oklahoma football did little to inspire confidence for a Week 4 win at Georgia with a 14-6 win over New Mexico in Week 3 that led to a Brent Venables response. Georgia football coach Kerby Smart demanded respect for the Sooners knowing full well what Venables’ team and his David Stone-led defense are capable of doing.
Stone was in the news for a not-so-good reason according to Nick Schulz of On3.com as he suffered an undisclosed lower body injury in practice leading up to the September 26 showdown. Schulz said Stone is undergoing further testing and his status for the Georgia game is now in question.
Stone is a 6-foot-3, 294-pound defensive lineman who had 42 tackles, eight tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks for the Sooners in 2025-26. He has 12 combined tackles so far this season including two behind the line-of-scrimmage.

The Sooners’ defense has performed well in its last two weeks against the Lobos and the Michigan Wolverines but could be limited without Stone against a powerful Bulldogs rushing game that features running threat QB Gunner Stockton and a stable of hard-nosed running backs.
Quarterback John Mateer played uneven football against the Lobos, throwing two interceptions. Mateer later made a surprising confession about screaming fans. He will be tasked with outscoring a Georgia football offense that put up 464 yards and 45 points against the Arkansas Razorbacks on September 19.
Mateer might not have as many chances to score against Georgia football if Stone can’t play for Oklahoma football’s stout defense. Stone is a key part of their run defense, making his injury status one to watch heading toward the big game.
