Alabama Freshman OL Chris Booker Currently Not With Crimson Tide Football Team

Alabama freshman offensive lineman Chris Booker is currently away from the Crimson Tide football program, head coach Kalen DeBoer confirmed Monday.
During his weekly press conference, DeBoer was asked about Booker’s status and offered a brief update.
“Booker, right now, is not with our football team,” DeBoer said.
Beyond that statement, DeBoer did not provide any additional details regarding why Booker is not currently with the program, how long he may be away or whether there is a possibility of him returning to the team. Because of the limited information available, anything beyond DeBoer’s comments at this point would simply be speculation.
Booker is a true freshman offensive lineman from Atlanta, Georgia, who arrived at Alabama as part of the Crimson Tide’s 2026 recruiting class. Alabama lists the young lineman at 6-foot-4 and 288 pounds. He played his high school football at Hapeville Charter Career Academy, where he developed into one of the more highly regarded interior offensive line prospects in the state of Georgia.
Booker was considered a four-star prospect by several major recruiting services coming out of high school. Alabama’s official biography lists him as the No. 5 interior offensive lineman nationally according to Rivals and the No. 14 overall prospect in Georgia in those rankings. The 247Sports Composite placed him among the top interior offensive linemen in the country as well.
He ultimately signed with Alabama after receiving interest from several programs, including Florida, Kentucky and USF.
Other reports indicate that his recruitment also included offers and visits involving multiple SEC programs before he eventually chose the Crimson Tide.
Booker enrolled early at Alabama and participated in the program’s offseason development process, including spring practices. That opportunity gave him several months inside Alabama’s strength and conditioning program and allowed him to begin learning the Crimson Tide offense before his first college season officially arrived.
However, Booker has yet to appear in a game during his freshman season.
Alabama’s official roster notes that Booker has not seen playing time in 2026. Through the Crimson Tide’s first three games against East Carolina, Kentucky and Florida State, Booker did not record an appearance.
His absence had also become noticeable before DeBoer’s Monday comments.
Booker reportedly did not travel with Alabama for its road matchup against Kentucky and was not seen on the sideline during Alabama’s 50-36 victory over Florida State at Bryant-Denny Stadium. DeBoer’s statement Monday provided the first public confirmation that Booker is currently not with the team.
For Alabama, the situation comes during a season in which developing offensive line depth remains important.
The Crimson Tide entered 2026 with a mixture of experienced players and younger linemen who are continuing to develop behind them. For freshmen in particular, the first year inside a major college football program is often about much more than immediate playing time. Young offensive linemen are frequently asked to add strength, adjust to the speed and physicality of the college game and learn a significantly more complicated offensive system before competing for meaningful snaps.
Booker appeared to fit into that developmental category.
At 6-foot-4 and nearly 290 pounds, he arrived in Tuscaloosa with the physical size to eventually compete on the interior offensive line. His recruiting profile also reflected the athleticism that made him an intriguing addition to Alabama’s 2026 class.
But his immediate future with the Crimson Tide is now unclear. It is important, however, to separate what is known from what remains unanswered.
DeBoer did not announce that Booker had entered the transfer portal. He did not disclose a disciplinary issue. He did not announce that Booker had permanently left the program. He simply said that Booker is “right now” not with Alabama’s football team.
Until Alabama, DeBoer or Booker provides additional information, that is the extent of what can responsibly be reported.
The wording of DeBoer’s statement also leaves several questions unanswered. Whether Booker’s absence is temporary or permanent remains unknown, and Alabama has not publicly provided a timetable for another update.
For the Crimson Tide, attention now moves toward another SEC matchup.
Alabama improved to 3-0 with its victory over Florida State after previously defeating East Carolina and Kentucky. The Crimson Tide will return to Bryant-Denny Stadium to face South Carolina on Saturday, September 26, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on ESPN.
Booker’s status will likely remain something to monitor as Alabama moves deeper into the season. For a freshman offensive lineman who arrived in Tuscaloosa as a highly regarded prospect, there was never necessarily an expectation that Booker would immediately become a major contributor during his first few games at Alabama. Offensive line development often takes time, especially at a program competing against SEC defensive fronts every week.
Still, any time a head coach publicly confirms that a player is no longer with the football team at the moment, it naturally creates questions.
Right now, Alabama simply has not provided the answers to those questions. Booker remains listed on Alabama’s official online roster as a freshman offensive lineman, but DeBoer’s Monday statement makes his current situation clear: at this time, Booker is not with the Crimson Tide football team.
Whether that eventually changes remains to be seen.
Until more information becomes available, the most important thing is not to turn a limited statement into something more than it is. There could eventually be additional context surrounding Booker’s absence, but DeBoer chose not to elaborate Monday.
For now, Alabama moves forward preparing for South Carolina while one of the young offensive linemen from its 2026 recruiting class remains away from the program.
