One of the biggest games of the Week 4 slate in college football is between Texas A&M and LSU. Texas A&M fell to Kentucky, while LSU lost to Ole Miss. The two will look to avoid a second loss in conference play in a game with massive College Football Playoff implications.
Now, Heather Dinich of ESPN is issuing a warning to both teams about their future chances with a loss.
“LSU will host Texas A&M on Saturday in a game that will feature two teams desperately trying to avoid a second defeat in September. The loser of that contest will see its chances of reaching the College Football Playoff sink to 10%, at best, a dangerous place to hover considering the most difficult stretch of the season hasn’t even begun,” Dinich wrote.

Only two teams have made the playoffs with three losses. Clemson did so in 2024, but they were also ACC Champions and earned an automatic bid. The other team was Alabama in 2025, but their third loss of the year came in the SEC Championship game. Considering Texas A&M still has dates with Missouri, Alabama, Tennessee, and Texas, while LSU has Mississippi State, Alabama, Tennessee, and Texas, a second loss this early could be difficult to overcome.
LSU and Texas A&M were not the only teams getting a warning from Dinich.
“The Tigers and the Aggies aren’t the only ones feeling the pressure, as Oklahoma travels to Georgia, where ESPN’s FPI gives the Bulldogs an 83.4% chance to win. A second loss would be devastating to a Sooners team that hasn’t passed the eye test since Week 1,” Dinich wrote.
Meanwhile, the college football insider also had a warning for Oregon, who could be in trouble with a second loss when they face USC on Saturday.
Despite a loss to Ole Miss, LSU is still projected to make the playoffs, but a second loss could end those hopes.
