Utah vs Kansas Prediction: Can the Utes Stay Alive for the CFP?

This is all about Utah and if it has a shot at something massive, but Kansas needs this, too.

It’s been a disappointing season, but the Jayhawks can make it all right with a shocking win to get to six victories and bowl eligibility. That would be great, and ruining Utah’s dream would make it that much sweeter.

The Utes have to win this, and then draw the inside straight of Arizona State beating Arizona, West Virginia upsetting Texas Tech, and BYU beating UCF. However, if that doesn’t happen, there’s still hope.

At 13 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, it needs to somehow move up three spots.

That’s not horribly crazy with (6) Oregon going to Washington, (7) Ole Miss playing at Mississippi State, (8) Oklahoma facing LSU, (9) Notre Dame going to Stanford, and (10) Alabama dealing with the rivalry date against Alabama.

Okay, so it would take something wild, but none of that matters if Utah doesn’t take care of business against the Jayhawks.

Why Utah Will Win

The Kansas defense appeared to make strides throughout the season. It had its ups and down, but when it held its own, the offense usually found ways to get the win.

Utah, though, should be able to run to its heart’s content.

The Utes have been on a tear over the second half of the season. Behind a fantastic offensive front that’s blasting away on everyone since the Texas Tech loss, Utah is second in the nation in rushing behind Navy.

Kansas is 0-4 when allowing more than 200 yards rushing. The Texas Tech game was the only time Utah has been under 225 yards on the ground. So …

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas, open it up.

The defense will fight the good fight, but it hasn’t been able to do much against even the mediocre ground games, much less a sledgehammer of an attack like the Utes will bring to Lawrence.

It’s Senior Day, it’s for a bowl game, and it’s time to let it rip even more than usual.

The Jayhawks have been okay offensively, but the passing game hasn’t opened it up unless it’s forced to – and it was too late in the losses to Texas Tech and Cincinnati.

There were too many short-range throws against Iowa State that didn’t go anywhere, and too many stalled drives.

Utah has an outstanding defense, but the two times it allowed teams to connect on more than 52% of their passes, it lost.

Utah vs Kansas Prediction, Betting Lines

Kansas will bring the energy and the offense early on, but it’ll be worn down by the Utah offense as the game goes on.

The Jayhawks will get plenty of points, but when they need to come up with a big stop on a key second half drive, it won’t happen as the Utes power their way to 250 yards rushing to stay in the national conversation.
