Northwestern Offense Faces Major Test After Key Injuries

Northwestern received some tough injury news ahead of its first Big Ten matchup of the season, with the Wildcats’ first official availability report revealing two important offensive players could be unavailable against No. 5 Indiana.
Offensive lineman Ezomo Oratokhai has been ruled out for Friday’s matchup after leaving Northwestern’s 41-7 win over Colorado with an injury. The redshirt sophomore was one of Northwestern’s most important returning offensive linemen entering the season after starting all 13 games in 2025 and earning All-Big Ten honorable mention. He also allowed zero sacks or quarterback hits over the final 12 games of last season.
Oratokhai’s absence puts more pressure on the next man up along Northwestern’s offensive line. Anthony Birsa took over after Oratokhai left the game against Colorado and could be in line for a larger role against Indiana.
The Wildcats will need the offensive line to remain consistent in both the passing and rushing games, especially against an Indiana team that has dominated through the first three games of the season. Birsa, who is listed as a 6-foot-5, 305-pound redshirt junior on Northwestern’s roster, will have big shoes to fill.
The bigger concern could be the timing.
Northwestern enters the matchup averaging 38 points and more than 465 yards per game through its first two games, with Aidan Chiles developing quickly in Chip Kelly’s offense. The Wildcats have also rushed for more than 200 yards per game while protecting Chiles well. Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti specifically praised Northwestern’s offense and said the Wildcats are running a “really nice offense” around Chiles.
Northwestern could also be without wide receiver Hayden Eligon II, who is listed as doubtful with a lower-body injury. Eligon suffered the injury during the season opener against South Dakota State after catching one pass for eight yards and did not play against Colorado.
The potential loss of Eligon is another challenge for a Northwestern offense that has already shown plenty of explosiveness. As a sophomore in 2025, Eligon started 10 of 12 games and finished with 37 receptions for 521 yards and three touchdowns. He also closed the season with back-to-back games of at least 90 receiving yards, including 127 yards against Minnesota and 99 yards with a touchdown against Illinois.
If Eligon cannot play, Northwestern will need its other receivers to take on more responsibility alongside Griffin Wilde, who has already established himself as one of the most reliable targets on the roster. Ricky Ahumaraeze and Frank Covey IV are among the players who could see increased opportunities.
The Wildcats have received plenty of recognition for their strong start to the season. Chiles was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after accounting for five touchdowns against Colorado, while Michael Kilbane and Braden Turner earned PFF Team of the Week honors for their performances on defense.
Now, Northwestern will need that same depth to show up in a different way.
The Wildcats enter Friday’s game 2-0 and face No. 5 Indiana, which is also 3-0 and has opened the season with three dominant victories. Indiana has outscored its opponents 145-16 and will host Northwestern in Bloomington at 7 p.m. CT.
The injuries to Oratokhai and potentially Eligon do not change what Northwestern has accomplished through two games, but they do increase the importance of the players behind them. Against its first Big Ten opponent, Northwestern will need its offensive line and receiving corps to find a way to replace important production and keep the offense operating at the level it has shown early in the season.
