Democrats want to limit salaries for college head coaches

Over the past several months, federal lawmakers have been deliberating on the Protect College Sports Act, which seeks to add some regulation to college athletics after the sweeping changes that have been brought to collegiate athletics with the transfer portal and NIL. So far, most of that legislation has been focused on the players, but a new amendment would add some regulation to the coaches.
It’s no secret that the top head coaches in college football are paid massive annual salaries, with about a dozen coaches throughout the sport making more than $10 million annually. Now, Democratic lawmakers are looking to limit those salaries.
Protect College Sports Act
The Protect College Sports Act is a bipartisan federal bill introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell to establish a uniform national framework for collegiate athletics.
The legislation seeks to regulate the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) compensation for athletes, standardize transfer and eligibility rules, and provide targeted antitrust exemptions for governing bodies.
While proponents of the bill believe it would add some much-needed stability and regulation to the sport after several high-profile changes over the past few years, critics argue that the legislation protects the financial interests of universities and the NCAA rather than the actual rights, safety, and compensation of student-athletes.
Limit Coaches’ Salaries?
While much of the legislation so far has been focused on the student-athletes, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) have proposed an amendment to the bill that would limit how much coaches can make.
According to a report from Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, Booker and Murphy want the Protect College Sports Act to cap coaching salaries at $5 million per year.
Should this amendment be added to the bill and the bill pass into law, this would impact the vast majority of head coaches at Power 4 programs throughout the country and nearly 40% of coaches overall.
According to USA Today’s extensive database of college football coaching salaries, there were 49 different coaches throughout college football making more than $5 million per year last year. While USA Today has not yet published its updated database for this year, that number has almost certainly grown.
There are actually at least a dozen head coaches who make more than double that $5 million cap, highlighted by Indiana’s Curt Cignetti, who makes $13.2 million per year, according to CBS Sports.
