Georgia Enters With Plenty of Momentum

No. 2 Georgia is set to welcome Oklahoma to Athens for a major SEC matchup Saturday afternoon, with the Bulldogs entering the game at 3-0 and 1-0 in conference play.

Georgia opened SEC play last week with a dominant 45-17 victory over Arkansas. The Bulldogs have been one of the nation’s most productive teams offensively, averaging 59.3 points and 539 total yards per game through three games.

Quarterback Gunner Stockton has helped lead an offense that has been clicking early in the season. Georgia has also been extremely effective on the ground, averaging 253.3 rushing yards per game.

Oklahoma Needs a Bounce-Back Performance

The Sooners enter Athens at 2-1, but the last two weeks have not gone according to plan.

Oklahoma lost to Michigan before struggling to get past New Mexico, winning just 14-6. The Sooners have scored only 24 points over their last two games and have fallen out of the AP Top 25 after beginning the season ranked.

Quarterback John Mateer has thrown for 652 yards and six touchdowns through three games, but he has also thrown three interceptions. Oklahoma will need a much more consistent offensive performance against a Georgia defense that is allowing just 13.3 points per game.

A Battle Between Two Strong Defenses

While Georgia has received plenty of attention for its offense, Oklahoma’s defense could make this game interesting.

The Sooners are allowing just 7.7 points per game and 104.3 passing yards per game. Georgia, meanwhile, has allowed only 45.7 rushing yards per game.

That creates an intriguing matchup. Oklahoma will need its defense to keep Georgia from getting comfortable, while the Sooners’ offense must find a way to generate points against one of the nation’s top defenses.

History Adds Another Layer

This will be only the second meeting between Georgia and Oklahoma.

The first came in the 2018 Rose Bowl, when Georgia defeated Oklahoma 54-48 in double overtime in a College Football Playoff semifinal. Saturday will mark Oklahoma’s first trip to Athens.

Now, nearly nine years later, the Sooners and Bulldogs meet again this time as SEC opponents.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday at Sanford Stadium, with the game airing on ESPN.
