Deion Sanders, Colorado Dealt Unfortunate Coaching News Amid College Football Season

The Colorado Buffaloes’ 2025 season has been a harsh reminder of how far the program still must climb under head coach Deion Sanders. After entering the year with hopes of taking a step forward, Colorado instead endured another frustrating campaign marked by inconsistency and missed opportunities.

Colorado suffered a 29-22 defeat to West Virginia – a result that officially eliminated the Buffaloes from bowl contention. What followed was a 42-17 home loss to Arizona State, a game that slipped away after the Sun Devils poured in 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter as the team dropped to a disappointing 3-8 record.

Now unable to reach the postseason, Colorado will close out its season on the road against Kansas State, hoping to at least win one more game amid growing speculation about Sanders’ long-term future. Despite signing a lucrative five-year, $54 million extension after the 2024 season, Sanders has been linked to outside programs, including Florida State, fueling ongoing conversations about what comes next for the third-year head coach.

As the rumor cycle intensifies, Colorado absorbed another significant development within its coaching ranks.

On Thursday, NFL reporter Jordan Schultz revealed that running backs coach Marshall Faulk has accepted the head-coaching job at Southern University. The Pro Football Hall of Famer is joining the HBCU program on a three-year deal with an additional option, marking his first collegiate head-coaching opportunity.

Faulk joined Colorado in February 2025 and worked to elevate a rushing attack that had ranked near the bottom of the FBS the year prior. One of the most accomplished players of his generation, the former St. Louis Rams running back boasts a Super Bowl ring, three NFL Offensive Player of the Year, and a league MVP. He now steps into a new challenge at Southern, where his leadership and name recognition are expected to provide an immediate boost.

For Colorado, Faulk’s departure is the latest shakeup, with a lot more changes expected in the coming months. As conversations about Sanders’ future continue to grow louder, the Buffaloes head into the offseason facing more uncertainty than clarity.
