It's been a dominant start to the season for Notre Dame's defense. The currently rank inside of the Top 10 nationally in several categories including scoring defense (No. 4), rush defense (No. 6), total defense (No. 3), turnovers gained (No. 4) and passing touchdowns allowed (No. 5). This week, they face an offense that's scored 44, 36 and 38 points respectively in their first three outings. 

Defensive coordinator Chris Ash will have to have his players prepared for a differently looking test on the road when they matchup with the Purdue Boilermakers and veteran signal caller Ryan Browne who hurt the Irish last season in South Bend. This unit has all the motivation to come into this game and shut down this aerial attack after last year's 24-point first half performance they allowed last season in South Bend. Here's the three biggest storylines, two crucial battles and one player to watch in the battle for the Shillelagh Trophy. 

THREE BIGGEST STORYLINES

1. The First Test Through The Air 

Notre Dame's first three opponents were all 'run-first' type of schemes. Purdue, it's almost the opposite. Don't get it twisted, they won't come out and throw 60 times a game and will still look to establish the run in some capacity, but it's nothing compared to Wisconsin, Rice or Michigan State. Purdue ranks 3rd in the country in passing yards per game, 13th in the country in yards per attempt, 30th in the country in passing touchdowns, 16th in the country in passer rating and has only thrown one interceptions so far in 2026. Notre Dame's secondary will be tested this weekend, no 'if's or 'buts' about it. 

2. D-Line's Opportunity To Shine 

Personally, I think the defensive line has played exceptional football through the first three weeks. But let's be real about something…dominant play against the run won't get you nearly as much attention as a dominant performance, as a unit, as pass rushers. Well, this is their opportunity to shine. Defensive ends Boubacar Traore and Bryce Young should have strong performances this weekend as well as a handful of interior players as well. Junior defensive tackle Tionne Gray recorded the first sack of his career last week against Michigan State and former Pitt transfer Francis Brewu also has the opportunity to wreak havoc on the Purdue offensive line. 

3. Keep Your Eye On The Safety Depth

For the second time in three weeks, Notre Dame is entering a game week without their starting boundary safety. Junior Brauntae Johnson was hurt during the Wisconsin season opener and senior Luke Talich was just announced as 'OUT' for their matchup against Purdue. Thankfully, there's still exceptional talent in the room, but the level of experience has dropped significantly. Senior captain Adon Shuler is going to play a big role on the back end of the defense tomorrow afternoon making sure freshman Joey O'Brien and sophomore Ethan Long are playing assignment correct football. 

TWO CRUCIAL BATTLES

1. Christian Gray vs Assad Waseem/Xavier Townsend

It's not a secret where Purdue wants to get the football. The slot receiver, taken up by Assad Waseem and Xavier Townsend make up the majority of offensive targets in the pass game. Those two have combined for 49 targets, 39 receptions, 588 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Nickel corner Christian Gray hasn't really been tested this season in much capacity, but that's subject to change this weekend. Gray will have to be ready to be targeted early and often and make the most of the opportunity when Browne does elect to throw in his direction. The nickel corner position got burnt a couple of times in this game a season ago. This is Gray's opportunity to right that ship. 

2. Bryce Young vs Nuku Mafi 

Purdue left tackle Nuku Mafi has allowed the most pressures along the Boilermaker's offensive line. Meanwhile, junior Bryce Young has been arguably Notre Dame's best defensive linemen through three games this season. The 6-6, 260-pound edge rusher has the length advantage and athletic advantage over Mafi who is 6-4, 325-pounds. Young should have the opportunity to add to his sack numbers and tackle for loss numbers in the run game this weekend. 

ONE PLAYER TO WATCH: S JOEY O'BRIEN 

It's not very often Notre Dame starts a true freshman on defense barring injury. Now, it's O'Brien's opportunity to take the field. The 6-5, 200-pound Pennsylvania native was one of the highest ranked recruits in the 2026 class and now he has the chance to show why on the field. We've seen O'Brien in spurts throughout the season thus far, but not in a starter, or start level snaps, capacity.

The last couple of true freshman to start in the secondary due to injury turned out pretty fine. In 2022, Benjamin Morrison stepped in at corner and in 2024, Leonard Moore did the same. Not to say that O'Brien is going to be the nest Morrison or Moore. But the level of confidence I have in his performance goes without saying.
