NIU’s Passing Attack Faces Test In Georgia State’s Top-25 Defense

The most shocking stat from last weekend isn’t about Georgia State’s high-powered offense. It is about the Northern Illinois Huskies spreading the ball to 11 different players in a single game. That is the first time the team has achieved such a wide distribution against an FBS opponent since September 16, 2023, per a report from the university’s official site. Now comes the hard test. The Huskies must keep that magic alive against a Georgia State defense that ranks 24th in the nation for passing yards allowed.

A Test of Depth and Timing

Georgia State enters the matchup with a 2-1 record after a tough loss to UCF. The Panthers allow just 157.0 passing yards per game, a number that makes the NIU strategy look risky. Northern Illinois quarterback Taron Dickens completed 25 of 37 attempts last week for 228 yards and a score. The challenge for Dickens is to find open spots against a unit that forces teams into short, safe throws. Redshirt senior wide receiver DeAree Rogers finished last week with 10 catches for 68 yards. He has now recorded at least 10 receptions in back-to-back games. If the Huskies want to win, Rogers and the rest of the receiving corps must stay sharp against a secondary that does not give up easy yards.

Defensive Stars Ready for the Show

The game on Saturday, September 26, 2026, will air on ESPN+ at 2 p.m. ET at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta. This is the first time these two programs have ever met on the field. Northern Illinois brings a defense that has forced an interception for the third straight game. Junior safety Kyon Conyers added seven tackles in the last outing, while linebackers Jack Murray and Jashawn Nelson each notched their first sacks of the season. The Huskies also posted a season-high four sacks. On the other side, Georgia State running backs Lanear McCrary Jr. and Qwantavius Wiggins lead an offense that rushes for 239.0 yards per game. With 15 tackles apiece, Jaydon Hood and Coby Owens head the linebacker corps. On critical third downs, the Panthers surrender only 25.7 percent, ranking within the top 25 for defense. Northern Illinois will need to convert on those downs to keep the Georgia State offense off the field.
