‘I Don’t Think He’s a Great Coach’ — CFB Analyst Gets Real About Deion Sanders Trimming the Herd by Cutting ‘Knuckleheaded’ Colorado Players

Colorado coach Deion Sanders hogged the headlines this week after dismissing several players from the team in the aftermath of the Buffaloes’ lopsided 41-7 loss to the Northwestern Wildcats last week.
Coach Prime courted more controversy this week when he called out the dismissed players to prevent them from “poisoning” the dressing room. In the wake of the Colorado drama, Colin Cowherd gave a scathing assessment of the situation in Boulder.
Colin Cowherd Delivers Brutal Deion Sanders Verdict
During this week’s segment of the “Colorado Football Coaches Show,” Sanders hit back at the criticism he has received after cutting the players from his team.
“People made a big deal out of last week, about us, you know, getting rid of a few kids,” Sanders said. “But it wasn’t a team thing. It was just a few knuckleheads. Every occupation we have, it’s a few knuckleheads, right? No, it was the few knuckleheads that I didn’t want to poison the team.”
During this week’s segment of “The Herd” podcast, Cowherd gave a withering verdict on Sanders’ coaching at Colorado, but sided with the headline-grabbing coach’s decision to cut the players from his team.
“I’m a mixed bag on Deion Sanders,” Cowherd said. “I don’t think he’s a great coach, but I do think Colorado is like a fourth-tier program, and he’s made them interesting; he’s raised money, and I don’t think it’s a good team. They don’t even beat average teams. They sure as hell don’t beat good teams.

“There’s the old saying, ‘With great power comes great responsibility.’ Well, with great money comes great accountability. And if your coach is like, ‘You’re not playing well and you’re bad on the bus and in the room, I’m getting rid of you.’ So, I am pro pay them and pro cut them, which I never was. It would have been outrageous to do this five years ago.”
While Coach Prime did not identify the three players who werekicked off the team, he revealed that the dismissals followed several chances given to players who exhibited conduct detrimental to the team. Sanders raised similar concerns last year about players’ behavior as the team slumped to a 3-9 record.

Sanders has made several divisive decisions as Colorado’s coach, drawing mixed reactions when he flipped the roster upon arriving in Boulder in 2022. The high point of his tenure was 2024, when he led the Buffs to bowl eligibility and an impressive 9-4 record, bolstered by Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders’ superlative performances.
Coach Prime’s Colorado holds a 2-11 record against Power Four teams dating to the end of the 2024 season, and his 18-22 overall record has put him in one of college football’s hottest seats.
The Buffaloes currently have a PFN Offense Impact Rating of 71.7 (#89 in the nation) and a PFN Defense Impact Rating of 76.0 (#68 overall).
