What games will you be watching during UNC’s bye week?

After last week’s disappointing stretch run ended with a defeat to Clemson, the North Carolina Tar Heels football team now has the weekend off. It’s UNC’s second bye week of the year, as they also had Week 1 off after playing the Week 0 game in Ireland. Last bye week, the Tar Heels came out after that and won easily, so maybe they can use the rest to get going again. That being said, Notre Dame will be a slightly tougher opponent than East Tennessee State.

No matters what happens next week and how they prepare this week, we still won’t have a UNC game to watch this weekend. In some sense, that’s a bit of a relief after the way the last game went, but it still leaves a hole in our Saturday schedules. With that in mind, though, I have a question: with there being no Carolina game this weekend, which one will you most have your eye on instead?

I asked this same question when UNC had their Week 1 bye as already mentioned. That time around, my own personal answer was, well, person. That time, I talked about my Division II alma mater Lock Haven and their road to respectability at that level. Since then, they have dropped two games and now sit at 1-2 on the season, although they did play highly ranked Kutztown tough. I won’t focus on them this around, but I will note that they’ll play Gannon later today. Go Bald Eagles.

However, the FBS game I’m most interested in this weekend is probably Ole Miss headed into “The Swamp” to play Florida. Ole Miss played in probably the biggest game of last weekend when they got their revenge against LSU and former coach Lane Kiffin. That victory moved them up to #4 in the AP Top 25 and got them first place votes. Meanwhile, Florida has gotten off to a decent start under new coach Jon Sumrall, sitting at 3-0 after beating Auburn last weekend.

While there are matchups that feature combinations of higher ranked teams, this one interests me the most. For one, I think this one has the highest chance of an upset. Then, there’s also the UNC-related reasons. Sumrall was somewhat famously a lot of people’s choice for Carolina coach after Mack Brown. That includes me and very likely former AD Bubba Cunningham, before he got overruled, if you believe some reports. That certainly has me interested in Sumrall’s progress at Florida, even if the chances he ever ends up in Chapel Hill are basically zero at this point.
