Tennessee football coach Josh Heupel turned his appearance on ESPN’s College GameDay into a $100,000 charitable moment Saturday after accepting Pat McAfee’s crossbar challenge at Neyland Stadium.
During the live broadcast in Knoxville, McAfee challenged Heupel to hit the goalpost crossbar with a football from around 25 yards out. Heupel accepted the opportunity and came through, sending the football into the crossbar and securing a $100,000 donation to charity.

The moment came while Heupel was on the field throwing passes with his son, Jace, a pregame tradition for the Volunteers coach. Heupel had a pass from his son slip through his grasp as the cameras zeroed in, drawing some good-natured ribbing from the GameDay crew.
Heupel responded moments later with a much cleaner throw. After striking the crossbar, the GameDay team reacted enthusiastically, while Heupel removed his microphone and headed toward the team tunnel as the interview concluded.
The challenge was particularly fitting given Heupel’s background as a quarterback. He played at Weber State from 1996-97 before transferring to Snow College in 1998. He later joined Oklahoma after Bob Stoops recruited him in 1999.
With the Sooners, Heupel led the Big 12 in completion percentage, passing yards and passing touchdowns during his junior season. As a senior, he led the nation in completion percentage, finished second in Heisman Trophy voting and guided Oklahoma to a national championship. He also spent two years in the NFL.
Heupel’s charity challenge came as College GameDay made its 13th visit to Knoxville ahead of No. 13 Tennessee’s matchup with No. 1 Texas. Both teams entered the SEC showdown with 3-0 records, with kickoff scheduled for noon ET on ABC.
