SMU heads into the weekend ranked No. 22 in the nation after opening its campaign with a 2-1 record. The Mustangs defeated Florida State 27-24 and UC Davis 56-10 before then falling 41-31 in their first real test, which came against Louisville on the road. In the loss against the Cardinals, SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings struggled, connecting on 24 of 35 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown, but while throwing two interceptions that proved costly. Jennings has now thrown four picks on the campaign, albeit with nine touchdowns. The senior quarterback has also thrown for 989 yards this season and has run the ball 17 times for 73 yards, providing SMU with air and ground capabilities.
Running back Kendrick Raphael was borderline unstoppable in the loss to Louisville, rushing 24 times for 197 yards and three touchdowns, with a long run of 40 yards sprinkled into his outing. Raphael will need to keep up that level if SMU wants to make it back to the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2024. Meanwhile, Yamir Wright caught seven passes for 70 yards and one touchdown in the defeat. On the season so far, Raphael is rushing for 7.1 yards per carry and has four touchdowns in 39 carries, making him one of the ACC’s top backs.
Missouri State, meanwhile, is 1-2 this season, falling 50-0 to Texas A&M and 30-24 against Marshall, but defeating Lindenwood 48-14.
