The Florida Gators’ rebuilding project suddenly looks a lot further along than expected. After the No. 21 Gators stunned the No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels with a 52-28 win at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, head coach Jon Sumrall made it pretty clear that Florida isn’t interested in taking its time.
The Gators are 4-0, and Sumrall believes championship expectations should come with the job in Gainesville.
Jon Sumrall Sets High Expectations for the Florida Gators
Sumrall didn’t shy away from the pressure after the biggest win of his young Florida tenure.
“We came here to win championships. But there’s no reason in the world that shouldn’t be the expectation at the University of Florida every year. So why wait? I’m not real patient, you can ask my wife,” Sumrall said.
The message came after Florida completely overwhelmed Ole Miss in the second half.
The Gators entered the season with plenty to prove after struggling to a 4-8 record in 2025, including a 2-6 mark in SEC play.
Florida hired Sumrall from the Tulane Green Wave on Nov. 30, 2025, expecting him to help change the direction of the program. He then led Tulane into the College Football Playoff before taking over at Florida.
Four games into his tenure, the results are already turning heads.

Florida Runs Rampant All Over Ole Miss
Florida’s offense dominated the Rebels on the ground, piling up 302 rushing yards.
Jadan Baugh led the way with 142 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while Duke Clark added 126 yards and another score.
The Gators scored touchdowns on five straight second-half drives, turning a competitive game into a blowout.
Florida scored its most points against a top-five opponent since its 52-20 win over the Florida State Seminoles in the 1997 Sugar Bowl, which secured the 1996 national championship.
Sumrall has also made history during the fast start, becoming the first head coach in SEC history to lead his team to more than 200 total points across his first four games.
Jon Sumrall Sees More Room for Growth
Despite the impressive start, Sumrall isn’t satisfied, believing Florida still has another level to reach as the program continues to develop.
“It’s not asleep, but it ain’t fully awake yet. It’s being kind of stirred up a little bit,” Sumrall said of the program. “We’re going to get there. It’s coming. I didn’t come here for us to be average.”

That mentality is already showing on the field. Florida opened the season with wins over the Florida Atlantic Owls and Campbell Fighting Camels before beating the Auburn Tigers 44-39. The victory over Ole Miss was easily the biggest statement yet.
At 4-0, the Gators have put themselves into the SEC title race and the early College Football Playoff conversation.
Florida entered this weekend with a PFN Offense Impact Grade of 87.5 (#10 in the nation) and a PFN Defense Impact Grade of 82.9 (#40), though those grades will spike after a massive, massive win over the Rebels.
