LSU’s coaching search just became a one-option mission. With Missouri locking down Eli Drinkwitz on a lucrative new contract, the Tigers must now go “all-in” on landing Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin remains LSU’s top choice to replace Brian Kelly, but the collapse of its backup plan raises the stakes dramatically. Missouri announced Thursday that Drinkwitz agreed to a new deal averaging $10.7 million annually, effectively removing him from consideration and forcing LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry to put every resource behind securing Kiffin.

Missouri’s move came amid reported interest from multiple SEC programs, including LSU and Auburn, as well as potential Big Ten curiosity from Penn State. By acting before Black Friday, Missouri ensured its rising coach wouldn’t be lured away.

Drinkwitz had been viewed as a fallback candidate if Kiffin declined LSU’s pursuit. ESPN analyst Greg McElroy even called him the “obviouscontingency,” citing his balanced offensive philosophy and ability to build physical, disciplined teams that mirror LSU’s traditional identity.

Now, there is no contingency. LSU’s options are clear right now. Land Kiffin or face an uncertain coaching future in the most competitive era of SEC football.

With playoff expansion and heightening the pressure, Ausberry can’t afford hesitation. The Tigers’ next move them back into the contenders category. One that's aggressive and final. Because the only name left that fits LSU’s ambitions. Anything less is a major blow.
