Disaster in the Swamp: Ole Miss blown out by Florida, 52-28

It was an “old fashioned butt whipping” according to Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding.

No. 4 Ole Miss continued its streak of losing in Gainesville with a 52-28 loss to No. 21 Florida on Saturday. This was more than just the absence of star running back Kewan Lacy however, and more than an emotional let down game from the win over LSU in Oxford last weekend.

There was no way to stop the Florida rushing attack as the two headed monster of Jaden Baugh and Duke Clark ran through arm tackle after arm tackle in the second half. Five straight consecutive scoring drives in the second half snuffed out any chance for a miracle comeback for Ole Miss.

The Gators piled up more than 300 rushing yards delivering body blows to the Rebels defense that proved valuable as it raced away in the second half.

Trinidad Chambliss played through a first half injury to his left side on a scramble when he took a shot to his quad and ribs. The senior signal caller went 25/34 passing for 298 yards with a touchdown and a late interception while also leading the team in rushing and adding two rushing TDs.

It can’t be one player that wins on the road in the SEC, however, no matter how talented. The defense flat out didn’t show up on Saturday against Florida.

Zero turnovers, no sacks and only one tackle for loss is not a recipe for success no matter at home or on the road. Golding and his staff have to figure this out over the next bye week for the eight game stretch that finishes this season. It was clear the team was gassed by the fourth quarter, and while it showed signs of life in the second and third quarter, it came out flat from the get go.

The bad thing about a week off after a loss like this is it could cause the team to doubt itself for a longer stretch before it can move on to the next game. A road game in Vanderbilt now suddenly seems more daunting after how Ole Miss played yesterday.

It all could come down to Florida having two very talented backs who fully exposed an issue seen in the first three weeks at times. Poor tackling allowed Louisville to make week one a closer game than it should have been, and it reared its ugly head in LSU’s comeback last week. The difference on Saturday against the Gators is the Rebels were playing from behind, which is becoming something maybe this team isn’t equipped to do.
