The UCF Knights offense played efficiently in their 21-13 win over the TCU Horned Frogs, starting Big 12 play strong.

Offensive coordinator Steve Cooper and coach Scott Frost got their playmakers involved, which opened up the rest of the playbook. They had questionable play calls at times, but the offense is a work in progress, with quarterback Keyone Jenkins easing into his starting role.

UCF scored a season-low seven points against the Pittsburgh Panthers in Week 2, a worrying sign against other Power Four programs. Its win over TCU doesn't erase its struggles from two weeks ago, but it is an improvement that could increase confidence throughout the rest of conference play.

Jenkins Bounces Back, Sets Program Record

The FIU transfer completed 19 of 20 passes, elite efficiency and significant improvement from last week's performance. His 95% completion rate set a new program record, surpassing quarterback coach McKenzie Milton's 92.5% against Austin Peay in 2017.

Offensive coordinator Steve Cooper and coach Scott Frost made it easy for Jenkins, calling plays that got the ball out of his hands quickly. He rarely took deep shots, focusing on short or intermediate passes to move the chains.

Jenkins played game manager, and it helped keep the offense stable throughout the game. Nothing fancy, but just what the Knights needed to win.

UCF Had a Balanced Attack

The rushing attack, UCF's bread and butter, made an impact against a stout run defense. Jenkins' efficiency in the passing game kept TCU from selling out on the run, which limited opponents to 80 yards or less per game.

It was a collaborative effort from the three-headed dragon of Duke Watson, Taevion Swint and Landen Chambers. Swint bounced a run to the outside, narrowly avoiding Horned Frog defenders to draw first blood for the Knights.

Chambers fought his way into the end zone in the fourth quarter, giving his team an eight-point lead. The trio combined for 95 yards, and the rushing attack finished with 106 yards, including nine from Jenkins.

Knights Played a Relatively Clean Game

UCF's offense received two penalty flags, one in the first quarter and one in the fourth. Tight end Dylan Wade was flagged for offensive pass interference in the first, and center Jacob Maiava was flagged for unnecessary roughness in the fourth.

The Knights eliminated self-inflicted mistakes, one of their Achilles' heels last season. Penalties led to three-and-outs or killed potential scoring drives as they pushed the offense back.

It's an encouraging sign to see little offensive miscommunication, highlighting how much the team has improved from last season to this season.
