Do you still care about this UNC Football season?

For about three quarters against Clemson there was a funny feeling rising in the stomachs of fans—hope.

The Tar Heel defense looked good, stopping Clemson time and time again, and while the offense wasn’t great it was at least good enough. Though, painfully, they didn’t do enough to take advantage of a lightning delay and once that was done, so was the game.

Now Carolina is about to play nine games in a row, but also in less than two weeks’ time Michael Malone makes his debut in Greensboro, and the media machine seems to be in overdrive in letting people know that his squad should be fun to watch. The football game that was left on the schedule to draw the most eyeballs was relegated to noon on ESPN, while Miami got the prized spot at 7:30 PM and the Tar Heels have to go up against Michigan while they play their fourth noon game in a row.

The nine games ahead all of a sudden look rough, with Pitt running roughshod over teams, Duke looking like a sneaky ACC contender, and Miami looking to get back to the CFP.

Honestly, the way that Belichick was chosen over a year ago to lead the program had always engendered some bitter feelings toward football, and it’s just gotten worse since then. Two of Belichick’s hand-picked staffers left in disgrace, John Preyer is still out here justifying his decision while his interference in trying to land Jon Sumrall is looking worse and worse as Florida just steamrolled Ole Miss on Saturday, and the actual team on the field really only has three bright spots—which is sadly more than they had last season.

Oh, and let’s add this: it really does feel as if the team is just on a march to the end of the season where everyone can admit that this hire was a mistake, they’ll give Belichick $10 million to go away because no NFL team will hire him, and they’ll just start over. Again.

All of this begs the question—do you still care about this football season?

If you’re a UNC football fan you know this feeling. The Dead Coach Walking where you basically just sleepwalk through the rest of the year before the inevitable happens. From Carl Torbush to John Bunting, and then Larry Fedora up to Mack Brown, we know what it’s like when hope is gone and you’re just playing out the string. It can be for different reasons, but ultimately we know this was just a huge bet that the Tar Heels made holding pocket twos hoping that their opponents were bluffing.

Of course they were holding a full house.
