Byron Allen is celebrating a major milestone with some of comedy’s biggest names.
CBS will air the “Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen 20th Anniversary Special” on Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 9 to 11 p.m. ET/PT, bringing together generations of comedians to celebrate the series that has spent two decades giving stand-up comics a national stage. According to the Paramount Press Express announcement, the two-hour primetime event honors the show’s lasting impact while spotlighting the performers who’ve helped make it a comedy institution.
The celebration features Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Leslie Jones, Sheryl Underwood, Wayne Brady, Tommy Davidson and many more comedians, reflecting the wide-ranging talent that has helped define “Comics Unleashed” over the past 20 years.
For Allen—the founder, chairman and CEO of Allen Media Group, parent company of theGrio—the anniversary represents the fulfillment of a vision he set in motion two decades ago.
“The show is something I created to give comedians a home and create a platform that I hope brings joy and laughter to the world,” said Allen. “It’s a journey I started 20 years ago, and I’m incredibly proud of it. I created ‘Comics Unleashed’ for comedians—a place where they could have a platform that, hopefully, continues bringing joy and laughter to people everywhere.”
Since debuting in 2006, “Comics Unleashed” has carved out its own lane with a relaxed panel format that lets comedians bounce off one another, trade stories and deliver stand-up material in front of a national audience. The series has featured over a thousand performers over the years, becoming one of television’s longest-running showcases for stand-up comedy.
The anniversary special also comes as the show continues proving it isn’t just surviving—it’s still competing. As theGrio recently reported, “Comics Unleashed” beat both ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” among adults ages 18–49 during one late-night matchup, even while airing a repeat episode—a testament to Allen’s long-held bet that evergreen comedy can resonate long after the news cycle has moved on.
