CFP Bracketology: Week 4

Another chaotic week of college football saw eight ranked teams fall and a major shakeup around the bubble as the calendar flips to October. We are barely one-third of the way through the season and the playoff picture looks a lot different than it did a few weeks ago.

My playoff picture after Week 4:

  • P4 Champions: Georgia, Ohio State, Miami, Utah
  • G6 Leader: Boise State
  • At-Larges: Texas, Notre Dame, Indiana, Alabama, BYU, Florida, Ole Miss
  • Outside Looking In: LSU, Texas Tech, Iowa, Oregon, Mississippi State

Some notes from this week:

  • The SEC currently has way too many ranked teams, but with nine more weeks of regular season games still to be played, the logjam is likely to resolve itself eventually. This is the first season that the SEC is playing nine conference games.
  • Florida continues to be an impressive story under new head coach Jon Sumrall. The Gators are unbeaten and boat raced Ole Miss 52-28 at home on Saturday. Defensive questions still linger, and the remaining schedule is daunting, but Florida is looking strong so far. They will travel to Missouri for a key road game next week.
  • BYU has not played any great team yet, but the Cougars are quietly still in the projected field. A road test against TCU awaits BYU on Saturday.
  • LSU is my current first team out. The Tigers beat up on mediocre Clemson and Texas A&M teams at home, but the bigger tests are still left on the schedule. They still have yet to play Alabama, Texas, Mississippi State, and Tennessee.
  • Oregon is back in the race after a road win against USC. A dirty hit by USC’s Desman Stephens took out quarterback Dante Moore early in the game, but the Ducks rallied around Dylan Raiola to win a key road game against the Trojans and get back in the picture.
  • The ACC has an ever-increasing chance of being a one-bid conference again after Louisville’s stunning 30-27 upset loss to Wake Forest at home. SMU is the only remaining ranked team in the conference, and the Mustangs have had turnover problems all season.
