Lane Kiffin Sends Stern Message to SEC as LSU Faces Severe Depth Test

Lane Kiffin left Saturday night with a lopsided win and a long list of worries. LSU beat No. 23 Texas A&M 35-6 at Tiger Stadium, a strong answer after the loss at Ole Miss the week before. Yet the celebration felt quiet inside the Tigers’ camp. Kiffin then explained why, and his message reached far beyond Baton Rouge and the Tigers’ own locker room.
Lane Kiffin sends SEC a warning over LSU injuries
Kiffin tied LSU’s growing injury list to the SEC’s nine-game conference schedule. He told ESPN’s Marty Smith that other leagues can rest starters more often, while SEC teams cannot.
“Like I said, seven more SEC games to go,” according to LSU Tigers on the TigerBait YouTube channel, Kiffin told presser. “That’s one of the issues with the scheduling now, the way it is in the SEC and what every other conference plays with. You got games you don’t have to play players in, and you don’t have to play them in second halves and different things. So, be careful what you wish for.”
The remark followed a costly night for the defense. Star linebacker Whit Weeks left the Texas A&M game on crutches with a boot on his right leg after suffering a significant injury. Weeks is a senior and the defensive captain, and he is second on the team with 24 tackles.
On3 reported that he fractured the leg, and no timetable has been confirmed. Backup linebacker Charles Ross also tore his ACL, and Kiffin confirmed he is out for the year.
It was not his first shot at the format. Kiffin raised the issue in July, saying the league should not have moved to nine games until the playoff committee showed it would reward tougher schedules. He also joked about scheduling quirks this week, including a second straight trip to Oxford.
That claim has drawn pushback, and the road ahead shows why the debate is far from over.
Kiffin’s SEC complaint draws pushback as injuries pile up
Not everyone buys the argument. LSU Tigers has played only two SEC games so far, and Kiffin himself described many of the injuries as random knee injuries unrelated to training or overwork.
That skepticism is reinforced by the broader picture across college football. Teams in the ACC, Big 12, and Big Ten are also dealing with major injuries, leading critics to argue it is simply too early to pin LSU’s problems on the SEC schedule alone.
Meanwhile, the injury list continues to grow. The week before, safety Dashawn Spears tore his ACL during the 32-24 loss at Ole Miss, and tight end Trey’Dez Green suffered a knee injury in the same game.
However, Kiffin said after Saturday’s win over Texas A&M: “I’ve not been around this many significant injuries early in the year like this. It’s really unfortunate.”
Depth is now the bigger question, since seven SEC games follow the next contest, including five against ranked opponents.
LSU is 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the SEC, and the Tigers are ranked 11th. They host McNeese, a Southland Conference team, at Tiger Stadium on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. ET before seven straight league games begin.
