Week 5 college football prediction market picks: Pitt, West Virginia upset bets

Pittsburgh and West Virginia headline the Week 5 college football prediction market picks as road underdogs, while Ohio State, Miami, Texas Tech and USC round out a card built on efficiency stats and recent form. There isn’t much value in picking favorites, but these are some of the safest contracts available.
Pitt brings one of the country’s best defenses to Blacksburg. Both teams are unbeaten, but neither ACC program has faced a big test in college football’s first month. West Virginia’s ground game gives it a great shot at Iowa State.
Texas Tech’s defense draws a Colorado offense ranked 121st nationally. Ohio State pairs a top-10 defense with a top-15 offense. The markets are too high on Iowa and unfairly fading on the Buckeyes as the Big Ten’s hierarchy reshuffles after Week 4.

Pittsburgh over Virginia Tech

Pittsburgh brings the stronger statistical case of the two underdogs. Game on Paper ranks the Panthers 25th in adjusted expected points added (EPA) per play and Virginia Tech 56th. Pitt’s defense also ranks second nationally in success rate allowed.
The Panthers’ defense leads the ACC at 8.5 points allowed per game and hasn’t given up more than 14 points to anyone. Now it faces a Hokies offense that ranks second in the league at 43.3 points per game. Pitt has also won three of the last four meetings in the series and four straight road games, scoring at least 30 points in each.

West Virginia over Iowa State

- Kalshi/Polymarket: 41% WVU
West Virginia’s best upset path runs through the ground game, where its offense ranks 29th in EPA per rush. The Mountaineers ran for 335 yards in last week’s 41-24 home loss to Oklahoma State. Iowa State has lost two of its last three games, including a 31-17 home loss to Utah, in its first year under coach Jimmy Rogers.
Iowa State ranks 36th in adjusted EPA per play, West Virginia ranks 92nd, and the Mountaineers’ defense ranks 123rd. Ideally, the Mountaineers want a shootout where they can outpace the Cyclones.
“We gave up 609 yards. We didn’t give our guys a chance,” West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez said after last week’s loss to Oklahoma State.

Ohio State over Iowa

- Kalshi/Polymarket: 85% OSU
No. 5 Ohio State ranks second in adjusted EPA per play and first in unadjusted EPA per play. No. 14 Iowa has the nation’s best scoring defense and ranks sixth in defensive EPA per play. However, the Hawkeyes’ offense ranks 93rd.
Iowa is 4-0 after quarterback Hank Brown hit Reece Vander Zee for a 16-yard touchdown with two seconds left in a 20-19 win at Michigan. Ohio State’s defense also ranks sixth, so Iowa will struggle to keep pace if the Buckeyes score early. The Buckeyes’ soft spot is run defense, since Illinois running backs gained 199 rushing yards against them last week.
Pick: 31-16, Ohio State

Miami over Clemson

- Kalshi/Polymarket: 87% MIA
No. 4 Miami has the clearer two-sided profile. The Hurricanes rank 22nd in adjusted EPA per play, while Clemson ranks 63rd. Miami has won its four games by a combined 171 points, though it lost running back CharMar Brown and receiver Joshua Moore to season-ending injuries at Wake Forest.
Clemson’s defense ranks 23rd in adjusted EPA per play. But its offense ranks 113th and faces a Miami defense ranked 35th. Freshman Tait Reynolds took over at quarterback after injuries slowed Christopher Vizzina, and the Tigers have won three straight since a 51-10 loss at LSU.
Pick: 30-13, Miami

Texas Tech over Colorado

- Kalshi/Polymarket: 83% TTU
No. 12 Texas Tech ranks 15th in adjusted EPA per play, and Colorado sits 79th. The sharpest mismatch is Colorado’s offense, which ranks 121st in adjusted EPA per play, against a Red Raiders defense ranked 12th. Linebacker Austin Romaine returned two interceptions for touchdowns in last week’s 49-14 win over Sam Houston.
Colorado has lost two straight after a 2-0 start, including a 41-7 loss at Northwestern in which quarterback Julian Lewis threw two interceptions. Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire’s team has won seven of its last eight road games. The one number in Colorado’s favor is the Red Raiders’ 1-4 all-time record in Boulder.
Pick: 34-10, Texas Tech

USC over Washington

- Kalshi/Polymarket: 76% USC
USC’s offense ranks fourth in adjusted EPA per play and third in success rate. Its passing game ranks first nationally in success rate, and quarterback Jayden Maiava has 14 touchdown passes against two interceptions. Washington’s offense ranks 96th in adjusted EPA per play, and its run game ranks 106th in success rate.
The Trojans’ defense is the concern. It ranks 129th in adjusted EPA per play after a 41-27 home loss to Oregon. Washington’s defense ranks 24th and leads the country in EPA per rush allowed, and the Huskies have won the last three meetings. But Washington is coming off a home loss to Minnesota, and USC’s passing attack gives the Trojans the edge at the Coliseum.
