Deion Sanders‘ fourth season at the Colorado Buffaloes is trending the way his third ended. The program fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big 12 following a 23-13 loss to the Baylor Bears on Saturday. It was Colorado’s second loss that came just one week after Northwestern beat them.
On Monday, national outlets like USA Today and Sports Illustrated added the 59-year-old coach to their hot-seat lists after two back-to-back losses. Sanders addressed the critics, issuing a scripture-based message telling his followers not to be afraid.

Following consecutive losses, Sports Illustrated reported that a midseason firing is highly unlikely for Colorado coach Deion Sanders. Instead, the outlet expects the university to allow him to mutually resign at the end of the season.
Any official program decision runs through Fernando Lovo, who took over as athletic director in January 2026. His predecessor, Rick George, previously defended Sanders by declaring his job security safe.
A primary hurdle to making an immediate coaching change is Sanders’ expensive contract—a five-year, $54 million extension through 2029. Colorado would owe a steep buyout of about $25.5 million (representing 75 percent of his remaining base salary) if they terminate him before the end of 2026. However, that financial obligation drops significantly to roughly $17.25 million if the school waits until 2027.
Coach Prime addressed his critics directly on social media by posting an image focused on biblical encouragement. “Fear Not & Do not be afraid appears in the Bible over 300x!” Sanders wrote. “These words appear consistently because the message is what it is. FEAR NOT & DO NOT BE AFRAID! Release the fear release & stop the nonsense you’re gonna be alright if u just Believe! #COACHPRIME”

Sanders entered the season healthy. He confirmed on Good Morning America that he is cancer-free following an intense fight with bladder cancer, noting that he finally has his health back. Still, oddsmakers and analysts doubted the team from the start. Preseason consensus placed Colorado near 14th or 15th in the Big 12, while FanDuel pinned the Buffaloes’ win total at 4.5.
Colorado’s offense cannot find its rhythm against FBS teams. The Buffaloes put up just 14 points against Georgia Tech, 7 against Northwestern, and 13 against Baylor. Their only high-scoring day was a 52-point blowout against FCS opponent Weber State.
However, the road ahead looks even tougher. Colorado welcomes undefeated Texas Tech next, and oddsmakers already have the Buffaloes pinned as two-touchdown underdogs. Matchups against Utah, Oklahoma State, and Kansas State will follow quickly. They now need at least four wins in their final eight games to secure bowl eligibility.
