The Oklahoma Sooners have hit their first bye week of the 2026 college football season. The Sooners have stumbled to a 2-2 record and feel like the season is quickly slipping away.

Oklahoma entered the season ranked No. 10 in the country and had legit College Football Playoff and national title hopes. In the intro video before its first game, quarterback John Mateer said the only thing they wanted was a championship.

Many people thought this team had the makings of doing that. However, after losing to the Michigan Wolverines 17-10, stumbling to a 14-6 win over the New Mexico Lobos, and getting dominated 41-13 by the Georgia Bulldogs, the excitement is fading.

In fact, ESPN's Matt Barrie said that the Sooners' season is over.

"A lot of people were bullish on Oklahoma," Barrie said on 'The Matt Barrie Show.' "They go to Athens (Saturday) and get absolutely embarrassed by Georgia, who you could argue is the best team in the country right now. At that point, Paul, nail, coffin Oklahoma done."

Despite Barrie's declaration, Oklahoma's season is not literally over. The Sooners still have eight regular-season games remaining, beginning with the Red River Rivalry against the No. 1 Texas Longhorns.

That doesn't erase what happened against Georgia, nor does it solve the offensive problems that have plagued Oklahoma through the first month. But it gives the Sooners a chance to respond before the season gets away from them completely.

The Georgia loss may have changed the conversation around Oklahoma, but the Sooners still have a chance to write the next chapter themselves. If they can regroup during the bye and show a different version of themselves against Texas, the narrative can change quickly. If not, Barrie's "nail, coffin" assessment will become increasingly difficult to dismiss.
