First Meeting: UConn may have totaled 566 yards of offense, with 445 of them coming from Dan Orlovsky, but Syracuse hung tough with 406 yards of offense. The difference maker came with the Orange defense forcing six turnovers which led to a 42-30 victory over the Huskies back in the Dome on October 30, 2004
Last Meeting: Perhaps we should have all seen it coming. Syracuse trailed 17-6 heading into the fourth quarter last year against UConn. Touchdowns from Justus Ross-Simmons and Yasin Willis sent the game into overtime. JRS caught the good ahead touchdown and Antoine Desaluriers broke up a pass on fourth down to end the game. Then the sprints came.
Head Coaches: Syracuse: Fran Brown (third year, 14-14) | UConn: Jason Candle (first year, 2-2)
Coach Bio: Candle played his college football at Geneva College and Mount Union in Division III as a wide receiver. His first coaching job was with Mount Union as a wide receivers coach. Candle would eventually become the offensive coordinator for a season. He left Mount Union for his first Division I coaching job at Toledo. Candle worked his way up from slot receivers and tight ends coach to wide receivers coach and eventually offensive coordinator. He would serve as offensive coordinator at Toledo for four years and associate head coach for two seasons.
After Matt Campbell left Toledo for Iowa State, Candle was promoted to head coach. His first game in charge of Toledo was the Boca Raton Bowl in 2015, which Toledo won 32-17 over Temple. Candle won two MAC championships with Toledo and reached bowl eligibility nine times. Candle would eventually be hired by UConn to replace Jim Mora.
Last Year: UConn had an interesting 2025 season, with all three of its losses during the regular season coming in overtime. The Huskies finished with a 9-3 record, defeating Boston College and Duke along the way. Head Coach Jim More left the program after the season to take the head coaching job at Colorado State.
Last Game: Miami (OH) kicked a go-ahead field goal with just under two minutes left in the fourth quarter. UConn drove into Miami (OH) territory but turned the ball over on downs on the opponent 38-yard line to end the game, giving the Huskies a 24-21 loss.
“Fear Me, I’ve Killed Hundreds of Timelords”: Quarterback Kalieb Osborne joined UConn from Toledo with Candle. His dual threat ability makes him dangerous with seven touchdown passes and five touchdown rushes through four games this year.

Fun Fact: There are plenty of coaching connections between the two schools. Syracuse DC Vince Kehres, DB Coach Perry Eliano, LB Chris D’Appolonia and DB Amare Snowden were with Candle at Toledo. UConn OC Nunzio Campanilie, WR Emanuel Ross, RB Jaden Hart and DB Jalil Martin were previously with the Orange.
